Chess problem #63

Drew will like this one. No ‘and White (or Black) magicially wins.’ We’re talking mate-in-2 here.

image
?

Yep. It’s White to move and win!

Solution. Posted 2/14/12

1. Rb1 and Black magically resigns. (book gives 1…Qxc5, 2. Rxb7#)

Sorry Drew and Wes, they didn’t mention 1…Nd7. Which might save Black. At least for awhile. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve found the book wrong.

Not Our Proudest Moment

A long rumored war story in Australia turns out to be true: during WWII a company of black engineers mutinied against their white officers. With machine guns. Things were hushed up then, but now the truth is sneaking out.

Is there any way to report this that isn’t going to cause a ruckus?

decent news media coverage here .
excellent blog coverage here
LBJ’s report: , I think this is what he wrote in 1942 after his 3 day visit there when he was a Congressman!
transcript of a recent radio interview.
Sweep it under the rug? Why isn’t the Times running this?

Video of the news report/interview at YouTube, which gives much more background than what the news articles and blogs are saying.

1942 was such a different world that we can hardly conceive of it. About the only thing unchanged is that Australia’s outback is a big chunk of Hell on earth. This incident didn’t take place quite in the outback though. Kelso is just south of Townsville Queensland, which is on the edge of the Coral Sea, along the Ross River.
7 airbases were built; Townsville was the major hub for aircraft in that corner of the war’s theater.

A touchy story indeed, that needs more documentation to be publicized.

More background, worth reading:

Drugs Are Bad

Whitney Houston, 48

Whitney Houston, the iconic American singer whose battles with drugs, alcohol and ex-husband Bobby Brown marred her star power, has died. She was 48.

Houston’s publicist confirmed the singer’s death to ABC News. The cause of death is not yet known.

Representatives from the Beverly Hills Police Department confirmed that the singer died in a hotel room at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Police got a 911 call from hotel security at 3:43 p.m, P.I.O. Lieutenant Mark Rosen said. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, were among the people that were immediately notified of her death.

Rosen said Houston’s cause of death has not yet been determined and no “obvious signs of foul play” have been seen.

Houston’s death on the eve of the Grammy Awards sent shock waves through the music industry, with many stars expressing shock and sadness.

Brown reportedly broke down back stage before a show with his band New Edition in Southhaven, a few miles south of Memphis.

Brown skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, “I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.” He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.

Her longtime mentor Clive Davis held his annual concert and dinner Saturday at the hotel where her body was found. Producer Jimmy Jam, who had worked with Houston, said he anticipated the evening would become a tribute to her.

Aretha Franklin, her godmother, also said she was stunned.

“I just can’t talk about it now,” Franklin said in a short statement. “It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

One In A Billion

Remember that “moderate muslim” we’ve all been waiting to hear from? He may have shown up at last.

I do not believe that cartoons, books, or movies can defame any religion or affect the faith of its adherents and true believers.

Those who defame the Prophet are they who slaughter and bomb innocent people all over the world—in New York, Madrid, London, Bali, Riyadh, Cairo, Kabul and Baghdad—while citing the name of Allah and his Prophet and under the banner of Islamic jihad. Ongoing demonstrations follow in support of their acts, while Internet sites sing praises of the “knight” Osama bin Laden, the “hero of the two raids on New York and Washington [i.e., the strikes of 9/11].”

...

Those who defame the Prophet are they who deem women defective, equating them with dogs and donkeys in that they invalidate prayer, as per the famous Sahih Muslim hadith. They believe that women are brainless and impious—forgetting that women are mothers, sisters, sweethearts, daughters, and wives, and are on an equal par with men. What is even sadder is that the majority of Muslim women believe in the authenticity of such hadiths that disparage them.

Go. Read. Think. Comment.

Personally, if he’s actually real, I’m amazed this guy is still alive.

More at The Blaze -

from there, about the author -

“It states that he is a secularist who sees the ‘religious movement,’ i.e., Islamist movement, as the source of the world’s woes, and calling it the ‘new Nazi’ movement, which poses a great threat to the entire world.

The dearth of information concerning him is of course not surprising: considering the sort of articles he writes and his stated position, he likely does not want to reveal his identity.”

The End Of The Line

Bodies of 21 WWI German Soldiers Unearthed In Eastern France
large section of original Western Front trench brought to light

“Killian Shelter” tunnel was a marvel of German military engineering but couldn’t stop special penetrating French shells

Der Spiegel decries lack of German interest.

Carspach France, in the Alsace-Lorraine region:

The ‘Pompeii’ of the Western Front: Archaeologists find the bodies of 21 tragic World War One German soldiers in perfectly preserved trenches where they were buried alive by an Allied shell

Engineers find trench network 18ft beneath the surface near town of Carspach while excavating for a new road

The men were part of a larger group of 34 who were buried alive when a huge Allied shell exploded above the tunnel in 1918, causing it to cave in.

Thirteen bodies were recovered from the underground shelter, but the remaining men had to be left under a mountain of mud as it was too dangerous to retrieve them. Nearly a century later, French archaeologists stumbled upon the mass grave on the former Western Front in eastern France during excavation work for a road building project. Many of the skeletal remains were found in the same positions the men had been in at the time of the collapse, prompting experts to liken the scene to Pompeii. A number of the soldiers were discovered sitting upright on a bench, one was lying in his bed and another was in the foetal position having been thrown down a flight of stairs.

As well as the bodies, poignant personal effects such as boots, helmets, weapons, wine bottles, spectacles, wallets, pipes, cigarette cases and pocket books were also found. Even the skeleton of a goat was found, assumed to be a source of fresh milk for the soldiers.

Archaeologists believe the items have been so well-preserved because hardly any air, water or lights had penetrated the trench. The 300ft-long tunnel was located 18ft beneath the surface near the small town of Carspach in the Alsace region of France.

Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t recall anything about WWI in the Alsace-Lorraine region. Almost nothing happened there. Although this is the area where the fighting started, several days before the war actually began, that horrible conflict quickly moved north and stayed there for the entire war. Very little is known about the southern end of the Western Front; Carspach is so far south that it’s off the bottom of most maps of the conflict. The town is about 10 miles south of the French highway A36 which runs between Belfort and Mulhouse, which are generally considered the southern outposts on either side of the Line, even though France held a small city located between them, called Dennemarie, as a military headquarters for most of the war. Carspach is south of there too, and only about 8 miles north of the border town of Pfetterhouse along the Swiss border. From what I can gather, the trenches down there were separated by the Largue River, and both France and Germany kept the sector quiet so that no shells would inadvertently fall into neutral Switzerland. So from August of 1914 until the last great offense and counter-offense in the Spring of 1918, this was the part of the Western Front that truly was All Quiet.

The dead soldiers were part of the 6th Company, 94th Reserve Infantry Regiment.

Their names are all known - they include Musketeer Martin Heidrich, 20, Private Harry Bierkamp, 22, and Lieutenant August Hutten, 37, whose names are inscribed on a memorial in the nearby German war cemetery of Illfurth.

The bodies have been handed over to the German War Graves Commission but unless relatives can be found and they request the remains to be repatriated, it is planned that the men will be buried at Illfurth.

The underground tunnel was big enough to shelter 500 men and had 16 exits. It would have been equipped with heating, telephone connections, electricity, beds and a pipe to pump out water.

The French attacked the shelter on March 18, 1918 with aerial mines that penetrated the ground and blasted in the side wall of the shelter in two points.

It is estimated that over 165,000 Commonwealth soldiers are still unaccounted for on the Western Front.

the real end of the line: French Poilu guard the border crossing at Pfeffenhaus with their Swiss counterparts, 1914
this is an actual color photograph; Lumière invented the autochrome process in 1907

Individual war casualties are still frequently found during construction work on the former Western front battlefields of France and Belgium, but the discovery of so many soldiers in one location is rare.

The tomb, poignant and grisly, sheds light on the lives of the soldiers who died in explosions from heavy shells that penetrated the tunnel.
...
The tunnel, six meters underground and 1.80 meters high, was built with German thoroughness, equipped with heating, telephone connections, electricity, beds and a pipe to pump out water. It had 16 exits and was big enough to hold up to 500 men in an emergency. The archaeologists have uncovered the sides, floors and stairways, all made from heavy timber. The intended permanence of the structure shows how static the fighting was for most of the war, in which both sides built vast trench systems that stretched 440 miles from the Swiss border to the North Sea.

Boots, helmets and weapons, a wine bottle and a mustard jar have been found along with personal items including dog tags, wallets, pipes, cigarette cases, spectacles and pocket books. A rosary was also found, with a French bullet threaded in among the prayer beads, evidently fashioned as a souvenir.

In Britain, the discovery of such a mass grave would be front-page news. Journalists would track down the descendants of the dead soldiers and tell the stories of the Tommies who made the ultimate sacrifice in the horrific conflict that shaped the 20th century.

That was what happened in 2009, when mass graves containing 250 Australian and British soldiers were unearthed near the village of Fromelles, close to the city of Lille. A program was launched to identify the remains through DNA matching, and 110 have been identified by name after over 2,000 relatives responded to calls for DNA samples.

In Germany, it’s a very different story. The find has only made the inside pages of a handful of newspapers. In the nation’s memory, the war is eclipsed by World War II, the Holocaust and the collective guilt that weighs on Germany to this day. Both conflicts have imbued Germany with a deep streak of pacifism.

“Britain, France and Belgium still refer to it as the Great War, but our memory of it is totally buried by World War II with the Holocaust, the expulsion from the east, the Allied bombardment,” Fritz Kirchmeier, spokesman for the German War Graves Commission, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. “World War I plays only a minor role in the German national memory.”

The Commission is holding out little hope that it will be able to track down the families of the dead.

“The French attacked the shelter with aerial mines with delayed-action fuses that penetrated the ground and blasted in the side wall of the shelter in two points,” said Ehret.

The French bombardment lasted six hours and the special mines, fired up almost vertical in a high arc, proved too much for the supposedly bomb-proof Killian dugout. The French attack followed a three-hour German artillery barrage with shells containing mustard gas.

A bit of trivia: The Alsace-Lorraine Sundgau region has belonged to both France and Germany several times, although it was an on again-off again Austrian principality until 1648. Then the Swedes killed everyone and France took it. The Germans took it as a war prize when they beat France in 1871. Half the towns have French names, half have German names, both keep alternate spellings around just in case, and the locals are probably bi-lingual and just want to be left alone. When WWI erupted, the French immediately took the region back, and held onto most of it for the entire war. Thus, while everyone thinks of WWI as the Germans occupying a good chunk of France, the France were holding a little piece of Germany the whole time. It was a big propaganda victory for France, as this is where Riesling wine comes from. New vineyards for free? Tres oui!! The Nazis took it all back in about 45 minutes a generation later, and gave the locals a pretty rough time. After WWII France took it all back and then some; now the border is along the Rhine River 25 miles or so to the east. And these days Hugel wine (yum!) is made in France, even though their buildings haven’t moved since 1639.

What a comeback! Eleven months after the tsunami .

Long day, late, hafta go but first ....

Take a look at this. And there’s about 30 more photos on the link.

When Japan was hit by both an earthquake and tsunami in quick succession in March last year, the images of devastation gripped the world.

And now after 11 months of tireless rebuilding, these pictures reveal the amazing progress made since those tragic events.

Photographers returned to the scenes of desolation to take these stunning shots that capture the way in which the areas most severely affected have changed.

spare a thought for lazy doreen

This will be difficult for most Americans to understand. I think. Ya have to listen closely.  She has a midlands accent. Wish an easier one to listen to had been used.

But it’s funny when you can catch it all and it certainly isn’t something I’d post too often.  Altho I might if we had more Brit readers. Which mostly we don’t.

On Saturday we get three papers and spend much of the day reading.  The wife even more then I.  She of almost endless patience.
So, one of the things I read was Damian Thompson. I read him often.  Today he wrote about, among other things, Doreen’s Story.
I’ll let him set the scene for the video.

Doreen’s story: the heart-rending truth about ‘lazy cow syndrome’

By Damian Thompson Politics

A five-minute film called Doreen’s Story went viral this week. It begins with the heart-rending throb of synthesised strings that the BBC reserves for tragic documentaries. “I first noticed it was a problem when I was, like, 20,” says a woman with a strong Black Country accent. She’s fighting back tears.

“I went to the doctors and he sent me to the specialist and he spotted it and I shall never forget his words. He says it’s confirmed.
“I’m a lazy cow. My mother had it, and there’s a good chance I shall pass it on to my kids. ‘Cos it’s genetic.

“Of course, my movements are severely restricted even today after all the therapy. I have trouble shifting me arse, and I’m on loads of drugs. Heroin. Ecstasy. Bit of crack at the weekend.”

I need hardly tell you that this isn’t a BBC film. It’s a “mockumentary” by David Tristram satirising benefit scroungers and the exaggerated respect with which they’re treated by right-on filmmakers. He says it isn’t intended as a political statement, but it will drive the Left bananas.

“Let’s be honest, there’s prejudice,” says Doreen, played with artful sincerity by the actress Gill Jordan. She describes the ordeal of the job interview: “As soon as I tell them I don’t want the job they ain’t interested.” Fortunately, Doreen can rely on the support of her daughter Trojan, who’s expecting a baby – “her fourth, by five different fathers and one of them’s twins…”

FOR THE REST FROM DAMIAN THOMPSON, HERE’S THE SOURCE

And here’s the video.

nutter with chain saw clears out a pub

I was just about to break for lunch when I saw this.
Jeesh ... and I’m always hearing how violent Americans are.  Not saying some aren’t but we’re always being put down by know nothings every time there’s a shooting in the USA.
Not much more for me to say, the video below tells you all you need to know.

Run for you lives! CCTV captures moment drinker with a CHAINSAW storms into pub and attacks customers

By DAMIEN GAYLE

Drinkers were forced to flee for their lives when a drug-fuelled maniac burst into their pub and lunged at them with a chainsaw just minutes after he was thrown out for smoking.

Dean Dinnen, 24, charged into The Endyke pub in Hull, armed with the petrol-driven chainsaw to exact revenge on a fellow customer who forced him to put out his cigarette.

As he marched up to the door of the pub with the chainsaw running he turned and jabbed it towards passer-by who ran to get out of his way.

And once inside the pub customers were forced to defend themselves with bar stools as Dinnen lashed out.

one law for gypos and another set of laws for the law abiding. sounds about right.

Notices were placed on villagers’ car windscreens two days ago reading:

‘Will owners of vehicles please make sure that there (sic) vehicles are removed from these roads until after the abnormal load has passed, which should hopefully be by 2pm Friday’. The mobile home is pictured squeezing past a historic pub, with police in tow.

It’s a bit hard to read on the car windshield so I’m trying to decide if it was a council officer who couldn’t spell or if it was a traveller notice.  Looking at the upper left corner it appears to be a crown like image.
Whatever ….  this bit of lunatic asylum story screamed to be shared in spite of my previous comments about tiring of this subject.
You must admit though, this is a bit out of the ordinary when the cops have to escort illegal activity.

Giant gypsy ‘caravan’ gets police escort through village to ILLEGAL travellers’ site after council forces residents to move their cars

· Officers with Land Rover and squad car escorted ‘abnormally large’ wide load vehicle to site
· Furious villagers lined the streets and refused to move their cars despite police orders
· Travellers are challenging Government ruling declaring their site illegal

By ROSIE TAYLOR and DAVID WILKES

When the residents of a small village heard a huge static caravan was being transported to an illegal travellers’ site, they expected the police to take immediate action.
What they didn’t expect were notices saying their cars would be towed away if they didn’t move them as the caravan was given a police escort through their main street.
‘Any vehicle that is obstructing this movement will be towed away at the owner’s expense,’ the signs warned car owners in South Harting, West Sussex.
The 15ft by 40ft caravan – thought to have cost up to £20,000 and to have two bedrooms – was being delivered to a site which has been ruled illegal, but is subject to a planning appeal.
As it slowly lumbered through the village yesterday, struggling to negotiate narrow bends and pulled by a lorry and escorted by two police vehicles, residents stood and watched in disbelief.
David Barnard, chairman of the parish council, said: ‘If they are not allowed there, isn’t now the time to stop another vehicle going on the site, instead of helping it? The concern is once there is permission for two caravans, suddenly there will be 22.’

Break, break … Need some advice here. LYNDON?

Why would she need permission to fix leaking windows?
What rewiring? On windows? If wiring was already in place, surely permission would have been given in the past. And permission for new plumbing in a Grade Two house?  I thought that would only apply for Grade One. ??

Things sure do get turned upside down here.

A mother of two, who asked not to be named, said: ‘It is absolutely outrageous. I live in a Grade II-listed house with leaking windows that needs rewiring and new plumbing, but when I applied for planning permission it was refused. I’ve got two children and no central heating but these guys can just move in. It is bang out of order.’

Neil Simpson, 50, said: ‘When I had a little touring caravan the council came down on me like ton of bricks. They told me to take it away so I did, because that’s what people like us have to do. There are perhaps two laws being applied.’
A Chichester District Council spokesman said they understood residents’ concerns about the delivery of the caravan, adding: ‘We have taken action in a number of different ways.
‘There is a planning stop notice which prohibits more than two mobile homes and any engineering work on the land. We understand one of the mobile homes has been removed.
‘We have also served an enforcement notice requiring the removal of the mobile homes from the land, which the owners appealed against. This is now the subject of a High Court challenge.’
A police spokesman said: ‘We recognise the local sensitivities around this issue. We are playing a minor role in the event.’

TEN MORE LARGE PHOTOS HERE. YOU GOTTA SEE THIS.

Why are these people still called “Travellers” they are obviously not planning on “travelling” anywhere! One of them even said “They might as well get used to it because we’re going to be there for a long time”!

University puts up posters giving foreign students lessons in how to use Western loos

I think I have mentioned this story before but in light of this article which caught my eye, it’s topical and worth repeating.

In the 60’s I was in the Navy and attended an Army school at Fort Slocum,NY. just off the coast of New Rochelle.
All branches of the services went there as the govt. decided for economy’s sake, it would be easier and less expensive to run one school for all, rather then each branch having their own.
The school also hosted foreign students.  Including a contingent from Pakistan.  Who had no idea apparently what our toilets were used for and so, they used the communal showers.

The situation was corrected quickly.

Toilet training for 18-YEAR-OLDS: University puts up posters giving foreign students lessons in how to use Western loos

By REBECCA SEALES

The stereotypical student is a messy sort of beast, with a fondness for alcohol and daytime TV and an allergy to washing up.
But for all their foibles, most people would expect the teenaged scamps to have mastered the use of a toilet.
Not so at Swansea University, where campus chiefs have put up signs in a helpful attempt to provide students with toilet training.

University bosses said they put up instructions about how to use the toilets properly after some were found in a mess, sparking a series of complaints.

Explaining their decision, they blamed ‘cultural differences’ in the way the toilets are used by foreign students, some of whom are used to the ‘squat toilets’ common in parts of Asia and Europe.

A university spokeswoman said: ‘The posters were produced to help address cultural differences that were unfortunately causing damage and hygiene issues.

‘Swansea University is a multi-cultural campus community, and the informational posters were produced for use in both male and female facilities.

‘The information was produced in conjunction with the International College Wales Swansea and displayed in key areas around the campus.

‘Since the inception of these posters, the situation has greatly improved in the affected areas.’

But the posters have sparked outrage at the university, which has 18,000 students and boasts alumni including author Kingsley Amis, rock star Nicky wire of the Manic Street Preachers and England cricketer Simon Jones.

Law student Stephanie Preedy, said: ‘We all needed good A-levels to get into university, yet they don’t think we know how to use a toilet?

‘It’s ridiculous and quite belittling.’

Hannah Prosser, a third year English student said: ‘Most of us found the posters quite funny until we realised it wasn’t meant as a joke.’

Screw Up In Hants

The country of England is divided into a confusing array of local areas, some of which have a level of government. These are called counties, although some are quite small. There are 83 metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties, and there are 48 ceremonial counties, and there are 4 official divisions, and there are 9 regions, and each category covers the same area as the others. It’s confusing, but it’s England, and that’s what they are there for. Have you ever tried to read an English postal address? Good luck. West of London is a county, a zone, that might actually comprise two counties, Hampshire and Southhampton.  This is Peiper’s corner of the land, and, it being England, both areas are called Hants.  And this makes sense if you’re English. And the Nanny State is alive and well there, full speed ahead.

Hants Girls Get The Stick

13 year old schoolgirls given birth control implants by the schools, parents not informed

“I did it because I felt like having sex” says one just-bloomed moppet

The procedure was carried out in Southampton, Hants, as part of a government initiative to drive down teenage pregnancies. As many as nine secondary schools in the city are thought to have been involved. But it has caused a backlash from parents who weren’t aware that their daughters had been fitted with the 4cm device, which sits under the skin. It is currently unknown exactly how many youngsters have taken part in the scheme.

Health chiefs have defended sexual health services going into schools, saying teenage pregnancies had dropped by 22 per cent as a result.

But campaigners from the Family Education Trust say the implant fuels the flames of promiscuity by giving girls licence to have underage sex. Norman Wells, director of the trust, has urged health chiefs to look at ways of discouraging sexual activity amongst children in the first place.

He said: “Schemes like these inevitably lead to boys putting pressure on girls to have sex. “They can now tell their girlfriends: ‘You can get the school clinic to give you an implant, so you don’t have to worry about getting pregnant.’ “They’ll tell them they don’t have to face the embarrassment of going to see their doctor, and it’s all confidential so their mum doesn’t need to know a thing. “Parents send their children to school to receive a good education, not to be undermined by health workers who give their children contraceptives behind their backs.”

A 13-year-old girl who had a contraceptive implant fitted at school without her mother’s knowledge said she wanted the procedure because she “felt like having sex”.

The teenager is one of 33 schoolgirls who have been fitted with the device in Southampton, Hants, as part of a controversial government initiative to drive down teenage pregnancies.

Now she has broken her silence to defend her actions, saying she believes she acted responsibly by taking measures to stop herself getting pregnant.

And her mother insisted she was “proud” of her daughter, although she claimed performing a minor surgical procedure at school without parental consent was “morally wrong”.

Emotionless detached promiscuity is one of the main tools in the Red Handbook for destroying a civilization. An amoral culture with no family values, no sense of nationalism, and a ruined economy is little more than a baying mob, ripe for takeover. But that’s a side issue, a root cause. Back to the story.

HORRY CLAP ARE THERE NO PARENTS IN BLOODY ENGLAND ANY LONGER???? What do they do, drop the babies out of the womb and deliver them to the council creche for raising, feeding, and indoctrination???

Yeah, I know, 13 is a tough age for girls. They’re both stupid and rebellious, generally going around in a state of near depression all the time, hating everything for every reason, embarrassed by everything, and all desperately mad to fit in. Isn’t this why the English invented horses? The pony club? Give the girls something to do to keep them out of trouble, something they can be responsible for and care about, something they can do in small groups of other girls while talking about the near future and trying to deal with the sudden hormonal soup of their bodies, something that doesn’t abandon them instantly to the predatory world? I’m not a dad, or an expert on little girls, but I was pretty sure the natural progression was years of pink, then horses, then sport, then boys. Not from Pink directly to I’m sotted, shag me arse in this alley, no worries!” in one go.

What happened to parenting? Morals? Self-respect? Maybe they really do need Sharia law. Or isolated boarding schools with really tall spiky iron fences and warders.

And the schools. Oh my, the schools. Nerve much, or are they acting in utter desperation because they have to? If the parents have given up or never bothered, and the big bowls of free condoms in the hallways aren’t doing the job, and no one else will do a thing to try and keep little children from having littler children, are they stepping up as batsmen to defend this sticky wicket? Or are they one of the main driving powers of Marxist based anarchy, forcing sexualization on the nation’s youth, like it or not?

13 is far too young an age to be sexually active, even in a country where the general age of consent is just 16. Not that this is only England’s problem, or one that belongs only to the 21st century. Not that I didn’t know a bevy of girls back in my day (1975) who had rounded their heels at that age or even earlier, and were defiantly proud of it, no matter how many abortions they had had. I knew of at least a dozen of them, and as far as I know, they all grew up to be trash.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
