Fashion Tips

OMG, I have to go meet the Queen of England! What do I wear???

Something formal, obviously. Demure, sophisticated, classic, and classy. Be absolutely certain that your shoes coordinate, and don’t speak until spoken to.

And make sure you do something with those eyebrows first, m’kay?

Sounds like good advice. Of course, if you’re Lady Gaga, you find a unique way to do exactly what’s expected, but still keep your freak flag flying ...

on the run from a taliban death threat.  try living like this for awhile.  stone age mfs.

Still trying to get caught up on stories I’ve had for a week. Keep getting sidetracked with other things. But this is quite a story no matter how far behind in the Q.

H/T COMPASS DIRECT

Pakistani Christian on Run from Taliban Death Threat

Islamic extremist sermonizing leads to altercation at barbershop in South Waziristan.
LAHORE, Pakistan, November 27 (CDN) — A young Christian man is in hiding in Pakistan from Taliban militants who seek to kill him for “blasphemy” because he defended his faith.

In February Jehanzaib Asher, 22, was working in a barbershop his family jointly owns with his cousin in Wana, South Waziristan – a Taliban stronghold in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas in Pakistan’s northwest – when the Islamic militants showed up to try to convert him to Islam.

image

It was not the first time the Taliban’s Noor Hassan had delivered strident sermons to him and his relatives, and this time Asher decided not to listen silently. He defended Christianity by citing verses from the Bible, and Hassan and another Islamic militant viciously beat him – breaking his left leg and some ribs and leaving his left hand non-functional.

He told Compass that he only defended Christianity and did not comment on Islam.

“One can bear the death of one’s father or mother, but can we keep listening to insults of our religion?” Asher said.

Nearby Muslims helped him and two cousins ward off the attack. Soon the Taliban militants began spreading the word to local residents that Asher and his cousin Christopher Masih had blasphemed Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

Before the Pakistani military’s recent offensive against the Taliban stronghold in South Waziristan, Asher said, his picture was posted at check-points in an attempt to help the Taliban and other Islamists identify and kill him.

Here’s the deal. Torture an elderly lady for two days, choke her to death, have baby, FREE at last.

This is NOT the average Brits idea of justice BUT god damn it there is something so fuckin rotten with what passes for justice here it’s appalling.
Shit!  WHT are ppl in power thinking? The victim here was 71.  Damn. I’m 72. I hardly even know what I’m trying to say. I’m just so frustrated and so angry reading this today with the morning coffee.  No doubt things as bad in USA but for now I don’t live there.  I’m beginning to wonder what living in Singapore might be like. ??  NO. I’m not trying to be funny.  I’m beginning to wonder seriously how much worse things are gonna get, and if there isn’t some place better then here and the states.  I’ll probably settle down in a few hours I guess but right now I find this absolutely impossible to deal with rationally. Wait a minute. Rationally?  How can this be dealt with that way?  Justice would demand the very same treatment be given the criminal responsible. But no.  Got to be humane even to those who by their own actions forfeit that kind of consideration.  Oh the left says, but then we sink to that level. Can’t allow that.  Oh yeah? Why not?  I’ll volunteer to sink there so libtards don’t have to.  But they won’t even allow me that pleasure.
Meanwhile ... the tortured victim remains quite dead and unavenged while the shit, scum worthless piece of garbage responsible has a baby, and will live with mommy and daddy and baby a free person with a new ID and protected by ..... who the fuck else?  The state with the compliments of the taxpayer.  Too - too much BMEWS.  Just too fuckin much.  And that isn’t even the only RCOB story making today’s headlines.

Killer with new ID who got pregnant behind bars wants to live in her old home

By Tom Kelly
Last updated at 9:40 AM on 08th December 2009

A murderess who became pregnant while a prisoner is to be given a taxpayer-funded change of identity - even though she is returning to live in her family home.

Lisa Healey, who was 15 when she tortured and killed a lonely pensioner, is due to be released on parole later this month after serving 11 years.

She gave birth to a daughter earlier this year after being seduced by an inmate from another open jail, whom she met at a Ministry of Justice forum on prison reform.

Now taxpayers face footing the bill to provide Healey and her child with new identities when the killer is freed.

But astonishingly, the 26-year-old is due to move back in with her parents - who are not changing their names - at their family home near Manchester, less than two miles away from where they lived at the time of the murder.

A prison source said: ‘It’s a crazy situation. They must be spending a fortune on this plan which won’t protect her at all because everyone in the area will know who she is.

‘Her parents are very well known around there, so it will be no secret. She’s already spent lots of time at her parents’ house during home releases from her open jail.’

Healey will follow in the footsteps of a string of other criminals who have been given new identities on their release, usually for their own protection.

Social Services rather than the Prison Service is understood to be behind the move to change Healey’s identity.

Tory MP David Davies, a member of the home affairs select committee, said: ‘The whole situation is appalling. First she was allowed to have sex and even have a child while serving a jail sentence for a brutal murder.

‘Now taxpayers’ money is to be spent giving her and her baby a new identity when they are released. It is a damning indictment of how soft the criminal justice system has become.’

Although the cost of changing Healey’s name is likely to be relatively small, social services are expected to spend public money protecting this new identity.

Healey became pregnant after meeting Michael Dent in February last year at a ‘Service User Forum’ run by the Ministry of Justice at Askham Grange open prison in York, where she is serving her sentence.

Dent, then an inmate of Moorlands Open Prison in Doncaster, had been given a four-year sentence for running a cannabis factory in his home.

The 40-year-old former public schoolboy was asked to attend the forum as a ‘prison representative’ to discuss jail reform.

Even though he and Healey were in different jails, they continued to see each other when they were on day release.
Lily Lilley

Victim Lily Lilley was tortured for two days

Their daughter was conceived in the Ibis Hotel in York city centre, where they regularly checked in during their days together.

Healey gave birth in April and is bringing up her daughter in a mother-and-baby unit of her jail.

Dent said Healey ended their relationship soon after the birth. In 1998, Healey and a friend, Sarah Davey, 14, murdered Lily Lilley at her home in Failsworth, near Manchester.

The girls befriended the lonely 71-year-old widow and, after being invited in for a cup of tea, tortured her for 48 hours before choking her to death.

They placed her body in a bin and trundled it through the streets before pushing it into a canal.

The pair were found guilty of murder and ordered to be detained indefinitely.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: ‘A change of identity facilitated by Government agencies is extremely rare and granted only when the police assess there is clear and credible evidence of a sustained threat to the offender’s life on release into the community.’

No Evidence!

Gee, how much of a NO SURPRISE AT ALL EXCEPT THAT IT TOOK YOU SO LONG is this one?

Blagojevich evidence stolen from his lawyers’ offices

Chicago police were investigating a burglary at the offices of attorneys for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich in which at least one computer containing undercover recordings from the sweeping corruption case was stolen, sources said.

The break-in took place about 4 a.m. at the law offices of Sam Adam and his son, Sam Adam Jr., in the 6100 block of South Ellis Avenue, police and Sam Adam Jr. said.

Contrary to early statements by a police News Affairs officer who referred calls regarding the burglary to the FBI, the FBI is not involved in the investigation, FBI Chicago office spokesman Ross Rice said in a statement.

The burglars set off an alarm but escaped the area. Investigative sources said there are no suspects.

Chicago police said eight computers and a safe were taken from the office, but they could not say what information the computers contained.

“It could be a happenstance burglary. All leads will be followed,” said Chicago Police Deputy Supt. Steve Peterson.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago declined to comment on the incident or the theft of evidence in the case.

It is unclear if the burglary could delay Blagojevich’s trial scheduled for June.

Yet another Watergate pulled off by the corrupt left. And it will get no media attention and it will never be solved.

Ever.

SO THEN, AS LONG AS WE WERE SPEAKING OF AFRIKA EARLIER ……….

I leave you with interesting bit from the Mail .... Not that it makes me feel all fuzzy and warm but ......

SO, JUST WHO IS AFRICA’S UNLIKELY ANGEL OF MERCY?

Amanda Platell

World Aids Day passes with Sting and Bono jostling to claim credit for their contribution to reducing deaths from the disease in Africa. Yet it’s worth remembering the person largely responsible for tackling the problem is President Bush, whose Emergency Plan for Aids Relief pumped $ 15billion into Africa to fund HIV/Aids treatment and care, saving around a million lives. Curious, isn’t it, that while the two preening pop stars are hailed as saints, you never hear a kind word about the ex-President.

Pearl Harbor Day

Roosevelt didn’t bow. Nor did he apologize.

50 years later, neither did President Bush

From the remarks delivered by President Bush to World War II veterans and families at Kilo 8 Pier, Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 7, 1991 — the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day:

I expect if we went around the room, all of us would remember. I remember exactly when I first heard the news about Pearl Harbor. I was 17 years old, walking across the green at school. And my thoughts in those days didn’t run to world events, but mainly to simpler things, more mundane things like making the basketball team or entering college. And that walk across the campus marked an end of innocence for me.

When Americans heard the news, they froze in shock. But just as quickly we came together. Like all American kids back then, I was swept up in it. I decided that very day to go into the Navy to become a Navy pilot. And so, on my 18th birthday — June 12, 1942 — I was sworn into the Navy as a Seaman Second Class.

And I was shocked — I was shocked at my first sight of Pearl Harbor several months later — April of ཨ. We came into port on the carrier San Jacinto. Nearby, the Utah was still on her side, parts of the Arizona still stood silent in the water. Everywhere the skeletons of ships reached out as if to demand remembrance and warn us of our own mortality.

Over 2,000 men died in a matter of minutes on this site, a half century ago. Many more died that same day as Japanese forces assaulted the Philippines and Guam and Wake Island, Midway, Malaya, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong. On that day of infamy, Pearl Harbor propelled each of us into a titanic contest for mankind’s future. It galvanized the American spirit as never before into a single-minded resolve that could produce only one thing — victory . . .

God rest the souls of our servicemen who died that day. And God bless the nation that stood up to fight en masse the day after, and kept right on fighting until they had completely won.

And look at us today with our 9/10 attitude, terrorists on trial in NYC, PC in the military that gets people killed, ROEs that won’t allow our troops to fight, and a dribs ‘n drabs reinforcement effort in Afghanistan that comes with a pullout timeline.

We are not worthy.

image

No. Let me rephrase that.

Our leadership is not worthy.

Another idiot voice heard from re.Pink is bad.  Update on previous story but remains stupid.

Now you must know if a labour (left wing) mp wants it, it just isn’t good or right.
What an ass.  Bridget Prentice, justice minister?  Hmmm. Since there isn’t any of that here she can’t be doing her job.  I suspect she’s hunting votes and sucking up to the sisters on the militant left.  As before, I can’t see how the color pink causes little girls problems.  The problems are usually adults drilling things into fertile young minds.

Ask yourself what we want girls and boys to learn from an early age.

“Is it that pink, passive and pretty is for girls

Didn’t work very well on my wife then.  She about the least “passive” individual I’ve known.  And come to think about it, that holds especially true for my dearest and most favorite late aunt, a staunch right wing republican all her life.

Isn’t this just typical of the left.  They don’t agree so shut down the store that sells.  Don’t expect anything different from the comrades. Do we?

Labour MP: ban shops from selling ‘sexist’ pink toys to little girls

A war on pink toys and clothes for little girls which calls on parents to boycott shops selling sexist gifts this Christmas is being backed by a Labour minister.
By Rosa Prince, Political Correspondent
Published: 6:00AM GMT 07 Dec 2009

The Pinkstinks pressure group claims that young girls are being led up “pink alleys” by stores which target them with presents such as pink fairy wings and princess dresses.
It is organising a boycott of shops including the Early Learning Centre, which the group claims are leading the “pinkification” of girls’ toys which end up crushing their ambitions later in life.

Bridget Prentice, the Justice Minister, said that she was supporting the campaign because she was concerned that shops were creating Christmas gifts which were aimed particularly at either girls or boys.

She went on: “It’s about not funnelling girls into pretty, pretty jobs, but giving them aspirations and challenging them to fulfil their potential.
“We want to say to organisations like the Early Learning Centre that we rely on them to be progressive about encouraging girls to think of themselves as equal, and not to reinforce the old stereotypes.”

Emma Moore, a mother of two girls who founded the Pinkstinks group with her twin sister Abi, who has two boys, lives in Mrs Prentice’s Lewisham constituency.
She told the News Shopper local newspaper: “Ask yourself what we want girls and boys to learn from an early age.

“Is it that pink, passive and pretty is for girls and that blue, bold and challenging is for boys?
“Since the early 1990s manufacturers and retailers of children’s products have fabricated restrictive boundaries of what it is to be a girl in today’s society.
“As a result body image obsession begins younger and younger and beauty is valued over brains.”
Pinkstinks has 2,000 supporters on the social networking website Facebook.

A spokesman for the Early Learning Centre said: “Come down to Early Learning Centre and see for yourself the huge range of toys in an assortment of colours.
“Customers can choose a red kitchen, a blue kitchen, a blue cash register, a yellow dollhouse or a gorgeous farm.”

HERE IS THE TELEGRAPH EDITORIAL REPLY TO THESE MISGUIDED PPL.

‘Pinkstinks’ is a dour and humourless campaign

Telegraph View: Little girls like pink; it is part of their innocent charm, not an indication that they plan to waste their lives.

Published: 7:24AM GMT 07 Dec 2009

Bridget Prentice, the Justice Minister, is supporting a boycott of selected toy shops by the revoltingly named Pinkstinks campaign as a protest against the sale of “sexist” pink toys to little girls. As she explains: “It’s not about funnelling girls into pretty-pretty jobs, but giving them aspirations and challenging them to fulfil their potential.”

It really is difficult to think of a sillier or more patronising cause, worthy of the trendy “Modern Parents” who inflict misery on their children in the pages of Viz magazine. Little girls like pink; it is part of their innocent charm, not an indication that they plan to waste their lives in “pretty-pretty jobs”, whatever they might be. One has to ask: what toys was Mrs Prentice given as a child to turn her into such a caricature of a humourless feminist?

A conservative (muslim) minister pleted with eggs replies …..

Well at least there’s ONE for certain and so maybe it means there’s a second one hiding someplace.  The cynic in me.  Actually, this lady isn’t bad at all.
I hope. I have heard her on the radio in interviews and in discussion on panel shows on BBC-4 (radio).

She makes herself a target I’m sure, of those who claim she isn’t, “muslim enough.”

I do NOT agree with her with regard to the Minaret issue however.  I don’t think she sees it through the eyes (AND EARS?) of the Swiss and Western ppl in general.  But then, why should she?  Nice as she is, and from things I have heard she is a good woman, she is not entirely, One of Us. She can be imposed on the Brits but not one of them in her soul.  She is also WRONG in her statement with regard to “DIVERSITY” here in the UK.
Sorry if I offend anyone but the truth of it is, like integration and forced (unfair) busing in the USA, diversity is something that has been grafted onto the Brit body politic.  It has been imposed (like this multi-culture crap) as surely as if this country had been invaded by an outside aggressor, and successfully so.

My week: Baroness Warsi
The Sunday Times

The shadow minister finds cheer for the Tories and moderate Muslims in the attack on her

image

PLAYGROUND BULLIES

I would not have chosen to start the week being pelted with eggs by Islamic extremists, as happened when I visited Luton on Monday. I was there to meet business people and support the local Tory candidates — but instead I encountered a bunch of idiots who screamed abuse at me, accusing me of not being a proper Muslim. They were like playground bullies. I invited them to calm down and engage in a civilised debate — a little optimistic given that there were eggs flying.

The last Tory to be pelted with eggs in Luton was John Major in 1992, and he went on to win the general election, so maybe it’s a good omen. I don’t take this sort of incident to heart; if I did that I wouldn’t be able to change anything. I’m a criminal defence lawyer from Yorkshire — it will take more than a few eggs to hold me back.

In fact, a surprising amount of good has come of it. I have been flooded with emails from Muslims around the country, expressing shame and revulsion at what happened. There has been an outpouring of condemnation. The vast majority of Muslims abhor this sort of behaviour — the response I’ve had shows that we are winning the battle for Islam’s soul.

The next battle is to improve the external image of Islam — and that’s much harder. Anti-Islamic sentiment is the last socially acceptable form of bigotry in Britain. The media do not help — we only hear about the extremists and the idiots. People forget what a tiny minority they are.

BATTLING THE BNP

I felt well prepared to face the BNP leader Nick Griffin on Question Time, as he has a strong following in Yorkshire — but not enough for his party to pose any serious threat. He can’t get anywhere because he’s got no policies. He just taps into the latest “anti”. It was anti-Jewish, and anti-black, and now it’s anti-Muslim. I didn’t get a chance to meet him before or after the debate at the BBC — we were all put in separate rooms. I supposed they must have been frightened we wouldn’t get along.

MY DAUGHTER, THE SHEEP

I’ve been the subject of a lot of racial abuse in Britain. During the last general election, someone came to my doorstep and called me a Paki. I said: “Okay, now you’ve got that off your chest, let’s discuss what the Tories can do for you.”
It turned into a perfectly reasonable conversation.

Some people assume Muslims are ruled entirely by their faith. But I did not oppose the war in Iraq because I am a Muslim; I opposed it because I am a lawyer. And I don’t believe in lower taxation because I’m a Muslim — I believe in it because I’m a Conservative. And I do not think Christmas should be banned. Councils can ditch their fairy lights if they want to, but they are not doing it in my name. And I cannot think how any Muslim could take offence at a nativity play. I’ve been to dozens. My daughter always longed to play Mary, but she usually got cast as a sheep.

MINARET MADNESS

On Tuesday night I went to a party at Conservative Central Office to celebrate the festival of Eid. There was a recital from the Koran, and it was noticeable that Jesus and Moses were mentioned more times than Muhammad. People forget that the birth of Jesus is an intrinsic part of the Islamic faith.
The protesters on Monday were understood to be members of the al-Muhajiroun group. I believe in free speech and the right to protest. But I think such organisations should be banned. They exist merely to cause trouble. They preach hatred and they believe in violence and aggression, so they don’t deserve a voice. The government has been too weak in dealing with extremists. Its policy is confused.

At least Britain is more grown-up in its attitude to diversity than countries such as Switzerland, which voted last week to ban the building of minarets. Minarets and church spires and synagogues can stand side by side in Britain; it is one of the beauties of our landscape.

FAMILY TIME

I always try to get back to my home in Yorkshire on Thursday, as I have five children aged between 10 and 18. My husband and I have large families, so when I’m in London an aunt or a grandparent takes charge. Weekends are devoted to the children — and the Christmas shopping is done online.

Drews post, Let’s Put Air Shocks On The Bus, and Abraham Lincoln

H/T Macker for this.

image

Until Drew’s post yesterday, I had never heard of this guy.  It’s so totally beyond the pale, as to be almost unbelievable.  That it’s beyond reason goes without saying.  I don’t get it. I don’t understand. I don’t accept this kind of public perversion, but then why not? Look at what passes for public entertainment these days.  Look what passes for acceptable and normal behavior. Look what passes for art and talent.  Look to the left and their values.  Things are accepted today that at one time would have shamed people.  But shame doesn’t seem to play a very large roll in public life anymore.  And to be very, brutally honest, conservatives have not been able to stem the tide. Have we?  And in our own defense I should also say we never really stood a chance of doing so.  Because the enemy is, and no surprise is it? Us.

I did see the links Drew provided and he was right.  Pretty damn sick stuff.

I had been going on about what I call our 5th column for so long, that even I got sick of it.  Doesn’t make it less true though.

Which leads me to this.  I found it in the preface to a book I read only in the last week.  It is credited to Abraham Lincoln. I thought it fit.

“At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means means shall we fortify against it?  Shall we expect some trans-Atlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow?

Never!

All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined ...  could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the appraoch of danger to be expected?

I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us.  It cannot come from abroad.  If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher.  As a nation of free men, we must live through all times, or die by suicide.”

Abraham Lincoln

Let’s Put Air Shocks On The Bus

so we can raise the damn thing up another foot to have enough room to fit this ... this ... filthy pervert underneath. Then let’s push it over a cliff onto the electrified, poison coated spikes on the roof of the explosives factory.

Kevin Jennings, NAMBLA supporter. Obama’s Safe Schools Czar

Safe for Whom?

A Reading List of pornographic perversion for your schoolchildren. By government decree

h/t to Cmblake6 via McGoo, lining to Astute Bloggers who link to Gateway Pundit where a commenter notes that Malkin is also running the story (I can’t be everywhere ya know, and this is what I get for taking the weekends off. This was Friday’s news.)

Malkin:

Doing the investigative work the dinosaur, Obama-enabling media won’t do, Scott Baker and a collaborative research team have waded through the sexually explicit reading list endorsed by safe schools czar Kevin Jennings and the group he founded — GLSEN.

Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit posts the team’s report. Make sure you have an empty stomach before you read.

Hoft:
Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings was the founder, and for many years, Executive Director of an organization called the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN started essentially as Jennings’ personal project and grew to become the culmination of his life’s work.

These are excerpts from the government approved - by this man Jennings - the government approved reading list for your high school child. Hardcore homosexual pornography, describing in high detail acts that are often illegal as hell. Sexual encounters between children in the first grade. And worse. Far worse. And all of this is “normal”. And protected.

The nicest part I can find to quote from.

We shared our toys and spent many summer days building sandcastles on the beach. On rainy days I’d walk down to Billy’s house where we spent the day reading books and building racetracks and playing sex therapist in his basement. We were human beings who knew no social inhibitions and were willing to explore our sexuality to its fullest.

And it gets far far worse than this. Worse by several orders of magnitude.  With pictures too. I won’t even print it. Follow the links above, please. Please read the excerpts. Read, judge, comment. Maybe I’m seeing it wrong. But I don’t think so.

Gay is gay. Fine. Who cares? Consenting adults. Just close the blinds first, m’kay? What we’re seeing here is pedophilia. This is what Jennings is all about. Criminal perversion. Get this freak out of the White House today.

According to GLSEN’s own press releases from the period during which its recommended reading list was developed, the organization’s three areas of focus were creating “educational resources, public policy agenda, [and] student organizing programs”; in other words, the reading list (chief among its “educational resources”) was of prime importance in GLSEN’s efforts to influence the American educational system.

Out of curiosity to see exactly what kind of books Kevin Jennings and his organization think American students should be reading in school, our team chose a handful at random from the over 100 titles on GLSEN’s grades 7-12 list, and began reading through.

What we discovered shocked us. We were flabbergasted. Rendered speechless.

We were unprepared for what we encountered. Book after book after book contained stories and anecdotes that weren’t merely X-rated and pornographic, but which featured explicit descriptions of sex acts between pre-schoolers; stories that seemed to promote and recommend child-adult sexual relationships; stories of public masturbation, anal sex in restrooms, affairs between students and teachers, five-year-olds playing sex games, semen flying through the air. One memoir even praised becoming a prostitute as a way to increase one’s self-esteem. Above all, the books seemed to have less to do with promoting tolerance than with an unabashed attempt to indoctrinate students into a hyper-sexualized worldview.

We knew that unless we carefully documented what we were reading, the public would have a hard time accepting it. Mere descriptions on our part could not convey the emotional gut reaction one gets when seeing what Kevin Jennings wants kids to read as school assignments. So we began scanning pages from each of the books, and then made exact transcriptions of the relevant passages on each page.

Are we exaggerating, or misconstruing quotes that could be interpreted a different way? No: Read the passages below and judge for yourself. There’s no wiggle room. The language is explicit, the intent clear.

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit.

Gift Ideas

UPDATE: I do my research for these posts, really I do. I just heard back from the CorkPops people.

They have a new and improved version of their product that seems to be actually new and improved! Their latest model, the Legacy, has a longer needle that is also graphite coated, to better deal with the artificial corks that are gaining popularity. The Legacy also has a safety shroud around it so you can’t stab your fingers or use the tool as a weapon. The shroud has a built in foil cutter, and CorkPops has designed the Legacy to make it much easier to get the cork off the needle. The Legacy costs a little more, but it appears to be an even better product. Isn’t it refreshing to see a company that responds intelligently to consumer feedback? Nice job guys. Here’s the link.

It’s that time of year again. Time to figure out what to get for this one and that one. Sure, sure, all your Conservative friends get a copy of Palin’s Going Rogue. I just finished it, and it’s a great book. It starts out a little weak, just like you’d expect from someone who has never written a book before and has to talk a bit about a childhood that’s long behind her. But then she gets going, and it’s a good read. I found it hard to put down, and really felt I got to know her from reading this. It’s pretty obvious that she’s a better person than politics deserves. And she got a raw deal from the whole deal, the likes of which very few Americans have ever been subject to. And that raw deal continues to this day. Dirty bastards.

The only problem is that this book is a runaway best seller, so the folks you’d give a copy to might already have one of their own. Glen Beck’s books are selling pretty well too.

Got a wine lover on your list? I’ve tried every corkscrew design ever made, from the “barman’s friend” classic, to the LeverPull and it’s imitations. And while nothing, nothing!, has been more durable than the original ScrewPull, $15, the gas cylinder powered Cork Pops is an awesome tool. Just cut the foil, slide in the needle, and press the button. Foop! And out comes the cork, every time. In just a couple of seconds. No fighting, no cranking, no torn up corks ever. We’ve had one for 4 years now. Hundreds of bottles of wine later and I think we’re on our 2nd or 3rd gas cylinder. You can get them in fancy colors and deluxe versions from the factory web site, or you can get a plain black one bundled with 2 refills at Amazon for about $26.

If you’re a big spender, or if you’re into barbecue and want to try something new, how about the latest Char-Broil oil free infrared turkey fryer? Called The Big Easy, this thing is a cross between a Keltie Bottle and a propane grill. “Fry” up a medium size bird in short order, and you can use dry rubs on it. Or marinades. Or brines. Or maybe even cook it stuffed? Not sure about that last one. Goes for $130 at Sears, and about $140 everywhere else. Amazon gives you free shipping, which is $20 or more from most places. Right now, it’s only $99 at Lowe’s. I looked around a bit, and you have to learn how to use this thing. Learn whether to put the lid on it or not, and get yourself a good thermometer with a long spike. Sugary rubs are a big no-no. Some folks seem to have problems with getting even doneness. Char-Broil has a bigger model too that can also be used as a smoker.

Other books? Well, there is another new book from Terry Pratchett. Hope it’s as good as all the rest. The hardcover book costs less than the digital Kindle version. Go figure.

OK, I have to go to my other job now. I hope these ideas are useful. Or at least more exciting than new socks or another neck tie. Hey, if you have great gift ideas, add them to the comments.

a sunday funny that says it all ……

Like Drew I was pretty much ignoring the woods fiasco BUT ...

I happen to be visiting Theos and caught this.  It brought to mind what Drew was referring to with regard to Tiger and the media. So it’s a worthwhile toon.

All for this Sunday ...

Cheers

A TOTAL LIBERAL JERK AND HIS STORY. HEART IN RIGHT PLACE, BRAIN OUT TO LUNCH

It’s true darn it. Really.

Another example of someone who means well but .... who just can’t see the reality. An affliction I believe that is prone to many libs.
So this do-gooder is going to give up much of his future earnings to help those po folk in Africa.  Of course, there aren’t any charities or deserving people in his own country, the country that gave him the ability to learn and earn enough to do that. Nah ... day be all rich folk here wid no poverty needs dealin wif.

Wonder what his mindset will be in 40 or so years when he discovers that this gift of his earnings was hardly a drop in the bucket and most likely saved nobody.  On second thought. Folks like this never recognize the futility of Africa.  But then, aid to that hopeless place is the in thing. Isn’t it? It shows how liberal and caring you are.

BTW ... have any of you ever noticed how much these weepy hand wringers look alike?

I will give £1m to charity, says Oxford don on £33,000 salary
By Vanessa Allen
Mail on Sunday

As an academic earning £33,000 a year, Toby Ord may seem an unlikely candidate to give £1million to charity.
But the Oxford University researcher, 30, has pledged to donate a large portion of his lifetime earnings to save lives in Africa.
He is starting off by effectively reducing his annual salary to £20,000 – and giving the rest away.

Dr Ord calculates that, allowing for inflation and pay rises, he will be able to hit his £1million target.
He estimates his salary from Oxford’s Balliol College will average £42,000 over the remaining 35 years of his career. The amount of his salary he keeps will also rise in line with inflation.

The moral philosophy researcher said he would sacrifice expensive holidays, gadgets and meals out at restaurants to fund his philanthropic pledge.
He said: ‘Many people agree that global poverty is one of the biggest moral problems of our time, but very few people are prepared to donate a large part of their income to help eliminate it.

‘I decided to put my money where my mouth was and to set up a society for people who want to join me in this. Ideally it will become a well-recognised way of living one’s life, something akin to being a vegetarian.’
Dr Ord lives in a one-bedroom rented flat in the grounds of Balliol College in Oxford.

His wife Bernadette Young, 28, a junior hospital doctor, has capped her own salary at £25,000. Dr Ord says that he expects her lifetime donations to top even his, although the couple have agreed that they may reduce their donations if they have children.
Dr Ord said he had given money to charity for years before hitting on the idea of a salary cap.

He told the Mail on Sunday: ‘I thought about how little could I live on, how much would I earn, how much could I give away and how much good I could do with that money.

‘I did all the calculations and realised I could save the lives of thousands.
‘Saving just one person’s life is often thought to be an amazing kind of thing you can do over your whole career.’
Dr Ord said his personal comforts were outweighed by the thought of helping others.

‘If I spent the extra money on myself it would be a little better,’ he said. ‘I could go on holiday more often, get an iPhone, eat out at expensive restaurants. It would be nice, but not actually all that much better.
‘My keenest enjoyments are all free, or at least within very modest means: reading a beautiful book, going for a picnic on a summer’s afternoon, spending a quiet evening at home with my wife.’

Dr Ord has launched a group, Giving What We Can, to encourage others to donate at least 10 per cent of their pre-tax income to the development aid charities of their choice. So far 23 people have signed up.
The pledge is not legally binding but is designed as a lifetime commitment. The money is paid directly to the charities rather than going through his group.

The pledge states: ‘I recognise that I can use part of my income to do a significant amount of good in the developing world.
‘Since I can live well enough on a smaller income, I pledge that from today until the day I retire, I shall give at least 10 per cent of what I earn to whichever organisations can most effectively use it to fight poverty in the developing world.’

PART TWO, THE ROMANCE OF HILLARY AND DAVID … IS IT REALLY LOVE THIS TIME? BABANAS FOR CIGARS?

To be fair and honest here, and really I should be otherwise I become the left, I have found flattering and very nice photos of these two people. But as you know, cameras shoot a many fames per second and every twitch and twist is caught too quickly to ever undo. Except with PhotoShop. However, I chose to post these photos instead.

Hillary Clinton and David Miliband all touchy-feely as she indulges her ‘toyboy crush’ at Nato meeting ( PART TWO)

Or, perhaps not - perhaps Hillary Clinton is, once again, taking the ‘special relationship’ a little too literally.

The U.S. Secretary of State collapsed in a fit of girlish giggles during a Nato meeting today at Mr Miliband’s presumably witty comments.

Mrs Clinton owned up to an unlikely crush on the ‘vibrant, vital, attractive, smart’ British Foreign Secretary last month.
Speaking in Vogue magazine, Mrs Clinton, 62, joked with an interviewer about Mr Miliband’s accent. ‘Well, if you saw him it would be a BIG crush,’ she said.

‘I mean, he is so vibrant, vital, attractive, smart. He’s really a good guy. And he’s so young!’
Her remarks are an unlikely compliment for Mr Miliband, who has often been teased about his geeky image.

Former Labour spin doctor Allistair Campbell famously called him ‘Brains’ - not because of his formidable intellect, but for of his resemblance to the nerdish puppet character of the same name in the children’s programme Thunderbirds.

Mr Miliband also seems taken with his American counterpart.

Today he seemed to take delight in teasing the former First Lady - and looked distinctly unimpressed when another man joined their tete-a-tete.
Last month he said Mrs Clinton was ‘delightful to deal with one on one’ and added: ‘She’s someone who laughs and can tease, and she’s got perspective as well.’

MELANIE PHILLIPS: Arrogant, ignorant and out of his depth, is Banana Boy Miliband our worst Foreign Secretary ever?

The most startling thing about David Miliband is that he has been taken as seriously as he has for so long.

His latest achievement is to have upset the government of India so badly that it has reacted with unprecedented public fury. This is because on his visit there last week he suggested that the only reason India was targeted by Islamic terrorism was its dispute over Kashmir, and that the government of Pakistan had played no part in the terrorist attack on Mumbai last November.

In a much-mocked article he wrote in the Guardian, he claimed that Islamic terrorism did not have one unifying characteristic but was merely caused by different grievances - such as Kashmir - and that the best way of dealing with it was not through confrontation but ‘co-operation’.
For a Foreign Secretary to display as he did such ignorance about the nature and antecedents of global Islamic terrorism was simply astounding.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
