Great Line

An excellent comment, stolen from Jen’s Demure Thoughts blog:

I was once asked my position on gun control.

I replied, “Prone.”

Non-Islamic Violence in Sudan

Who needs Islam to stir up that hornet’s nest? All the tribes in Sudan are constantly at war with all the other tribes in Sudan. And many of the same tribes are across the border in Ethiopia.

161 shot dead in Sudan

BREAKING NEWS: Gunmen kill 161 people in Jonglei’s Akobo
By Philip Thon Aleu

August 3, 2009 (BOR TOWN) – Some 161 people from Lou Nuer group are counted dead and 29 injured in Akobo County following gunmen attack on August 2, officials say here.

Speaking at an emotional press conference in Bor Town Monday, Commissioner Goi Jooyul Yol detailed that 100 women, 50 children and 11 SPLA soldiers are among the dead during the attack on Geni River at Mareng, 40 Kilometers south west Akobo Town.

“Of the 29 wounded, 3 are SPLA and the rest are civilians,” he added.

The attackers, who carried out their raid at dawn, are believed to be one of the groups of Murle tribesmen that had attacked Lony village on July 29 and reportedly killing a couple and abducting a child.

Official: 185 killed in Sudan tribal violence

CAIRO – A local south Sudanese official says gunmen have attacked a group of displaced people camping near a river close to the Ethiopian border, killing 185 of them. The official, reached by telephone, says more than half of the victims of Sunday’s attack were women and children. A flare-up of tribal clashes over cattle and territory in south Sudan has left some 1,000 people killed this year.

Goi Yol said Monday that workers have so far counted 185 bodies, mostly members of the Lou-Nuer tribe. The dead included 12 soldiers assigned to protect the group. Yol blamed the rival Murle tribe for the attack. The two tribes have for years been engaged in tit-for-tat attacks, but women and children have increasingly been targeted recently.

The numbers may vary from news report to news report, but this is the same incident they are all referring to. Tribalism. Villagers killing each other in bulk quantities, keeping alive a never ending vendetta. Why? The whole thing is over some cows, and a bit of grazing land. There is plenty of land there that can’t be used for cattle, because of that annoying little tsetse fly.

This latest flare-up is just one of many. But it does point out that the tribalists don’t need Big Mo to get to killin’ on their neighbors. This crew are all animists, and they manage to kill each other just fine, and have for thousands of years.

The Joshua Project has done a decent job of listing all the tribes in the Sudan and their cultural basics. There are more than 300 tribes in that country. At about 967,500 square miles in size, Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is the size of Alaska plus Texas plus Virginia. 40 million people live there. This is the land that once was Nubia and Kush - people have been killing each other there since there were people, long before Pharaoh, before they were known as the Anu, right back to 4000BC when they were just the “A-Group Culture”. Some folks just never advance much.

Country/City Counter Screwy

The widget over on the top of the right sidebar is acting up today. It’s an actual bit of software that I purchased, made by NeoWorx. They are doing some maintenance. So if you get that slow Adobe Flash 10 script error message, just abort the script.

I contacted the company, and they say

Scheduled database maintenance - FINISHED

We are conducting a long-needed maintenance of your database. This may cause a few brief interruptions of your counter, but be assured that your visitor count will not be affected. Your data is SAFE! Thank you for your patience.

Which is nice, but if it isn’t working properly in half an hour then I’ll take it down for a day or two.

Tanker driver dragged to court for smoking - even though it was a fake cigarette.

Perhaps an understandable mistake made by the council spy but heck ... all she had to do is approach the man as he suggestes here, and all could have been cleared.  But no.  This is after all England where, as my Brit wife reminds me, if there is a logical and easy way to do things, Brits will look for the hard way instead.

bat

See the link for the photos, especially the fake ciggies.  When I quite over 20 years ago, I had to do it the hard way. Cold turkey. But I did it.
I have been informed btw, that even in the states there are stupid idiot laws that are enforceable, that says a person can not even smoke in their own freeken car once they enter the parking space where they work.  OUTRAGEOUS!  Tempted to ask what the world is coming to but fear greatly I already know the answer.
C’mon. Can’t smoke in your own car?  How bad do things have to get before ppl start saying enough, and revolting against the dictatorship of the politically correct?

bat

Tanker driver dragged to court for smoking - even though it was a fake cigarette
By Andy Dolan

When new laws made it illegal to smoke in a company vehicle, tanker driver Chris Minihan accepted that his days of puffing away at the wheel were over.
In the two years since then he has been trying hard to kick the habit - and even invested in a fake electronic cigarette to help him.

But today the father of one will be in court to fight possible fines of up to £2,700 for smoking in a public place and dropping ash.
He claims a council enforcement officer mistook the fake cigarette for a real one when she spotted Mr Minihan during his rest-break at a picnic area.
Mr Minihan, 52, was initially issued with fixed penalty notices for £125 but elected to go to court and try to persuade magistrates he was ‘smoking’ his £38 Gamucci microelectronic cigarette.

The device contains a tiny rechargeable battery and an atomising chamber. Users plug a liquid nicotine cartridge into the chamber and their sucking on the ‘cigarette’ causes it to heat up, turning the liquid into vapour which looks like smoke.

The ‘cigarette’ lets users satisfy their nicotine craving without carcinogens or tar and without the problems of second-hand smoke associated with cigarettes.
It is exempt from the anti-smoking legislation.
Users can slowly reduce the strength of the nicotine cartridges until they have kicked the habit.

Mr Minihan, of Anfield, Liverpool, said: ‘I have been trying to quit for years, but after they made it illegal to smoke in the cab, I decided to quit for good.
‘I had heard about these devices and decided to give them a try. They do look and feel exactly like a cigarette, so I can understand why the council enforcement officer could have been mistaken.’

The officer took three photographs of Mr Minihan’s tanker at the Wigg Island nature reserve in Runcorn, Cheshire, which is managed by Halton Borough Council.
He said: ‘If she had approached me on the day I could have shown her what I was doing and the whole thing could’ve been nipped in the bud then.
‘Instead, I only found out what she had done when an official arrived at the company yard two days later to issue me with the fixed penalty notices.’
Mr Minihan claims the ‘aggressive’ official refused to accept his explanation.

He was given a fixed penalty notice of £75 for littering, which could be reduced to £50 if paid within ten days, and a second of £50 for smoking in a public place.
The driver refused to accept the penalties and was summonsed to Runcorn Magistrates’ Court. If found guilty he could be fined up to £2,700 plus costs.
Mr Minihan, who has since been made redundant from Neston Tank Cleaners in Kirkby, Merseyside, bought the fake cigarette from the online store Prezzybox.com.

He will represent himself in court, but the firm has offered to pay any costs if he loses the case.
The Health Act 2006, which came into force in July 2007, made almost all enclosed public places and workplaces smoke free. It includes work vehicles and applies to staff, customers and visitors.

Halton Borough Council said last night: ‘We cannot comment while legal proceedings are ongoing.’
Last month, Cardiff taxi driver Goldeep Singh, 46, was fined £65 with £135 costs for smoking in his cab. Singh, of Llanishen, Cardiff, had refused to pay a fixed penalty notice.

Shamelessly stolen from Joe at … A YANK IN KIWI LAND …

H/T Joe, http://ayankinkiwiland.blogspot.com/

Hope and Change

You might recall that John Hinckley was a seriously deranged young man who shot President Reagan in the early 1980s. Hinckley, extremely jealous, was absolutely obsessed with movie star Jodie Foster, and in his twisted mind, loved Jodie Foster to the point that, to make himself well-known to her, he attempted to assassinate President Reagan.

There is speculation Hinckley may soon be released as having been rehabilitated.

Consequently, you may appreciate the following letter from John McCain received by the staff at the mental facility treating Hinckley:

To: John Hinckley
From: Sen. John McCain

In our fine country’s spirit of understanding and forgiveness, we want you to know there is a non-partisan consensus of compassion and forgiveness throughout America.

We are confident that you will soon make a complete recovery and return to your family and join the world again as a healthy and productive young man.

Best Wishes,

John McCain

PS: While you have been incarcerated, Barack Obama has been banging Jodie Foster like a screen door in a tornado.

You might want to look into that.

The Green Flag Drips Red, Again

Islamists kill 700+ in Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Police in northern Nigeria say they’re investigating how a homegrown Islamist sect unleashed a wave of violence that left more than 700 people dead in clashes last week.

Borno state police spokesman Isa Azaza says police are holding 20 men suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect. He says some of the men were seized with gunpowder, vats of acid, aluminum containers for bomb-making, assault rifles and black-and-white flags with Arabic inscriptions.

Azaza said the group was well organized in its attacks on police stations and government installations.

The city of Maiduguri was calm Monday morning, with police conducting street patrols.

The radical group sparked the violence with a July 26 attack on a police station in Bauchi. Violence quickly spread to three other northern states.

Yeah right. “Homegrown radical group”. Watch how further investigation shows direct ties to Al Q, Iran, and North Korea, with some assistance by Russia. “Homegrown” my pinkie toe.

But don’t worry, it’s only Africans. Nobody gives a damn what they do, so let them keep right on killing each other, as usual. As always. Cuz that’s Africa, the primitive land. Dozens of nations, hundreds of tribes, but just one outlook.

Birthers

A Natural Born Kenyan?

I haven’t run too many stories on this Obama birth certificate stuff. It seemed too far out, at least at first. Many of the lawsuits brought up on this subject were thrown out. Several of the original movers and shakers were people with, um, a bit of a wobbly reputation. But the story persists. Just last week I watched Ann Coulter cut the Birthers off at the knees, write them off as nut cases, and distance herself from their quest. Birthers are the new 9/11 Conspiracy Truthers.

But unlike the Truthers, the Birthers questions can be answered. It really does look like our new President is hiding his past. Sure, he came out of nowhere, with very little job experience, and lied in public left and lefter about his former associates, commies and agitators all. And he got away with it. Even though he wrote in his two books how he hung out with these types, nobody listened. So We elected a pig in a poke, a guy with no background, a halfrican enigma who’s only real skill was delivering meaningless sound bites that sounded real nice.

But Obama’s past is still under wraps. Nobody can dig up any information on him. Not his primary school records, not his college work, just one or two short essays from his time as president of the Harvard Law Review. Nobody can be found who took his courses, yet we’re told he was a professor of Constitutional Law, or at least a guest lecturer on the subject. Somewhere in between? Where’s the Beef™? He worked at a law office. Right down the hall from Bill Ayers. The guy who he claims not to know. The guy who used to babysit his kids. Under the bus. But even his former coworkers hardly knew he was there. Going back a bit in time, how did this guy get into Ivy League schools? Who paid the tuition? And then there’s that whole ACORN connection, and his time spent as a rabble rouser and protester trainer community organizer and grass roots campaigning consultant. It’s all a big mystery. We’ve been fed a pile of misinformation, yet at the same time nuggets of truth may have been delivered but were then ignored. Go figure. Most folks didn’t notice it. Most folks don’t question his eligibility to be President. Very few even understand the laws that were in place back in 1961, and even fewer realize that those are the laws that apply to the Birther question, not the laws we have today. Heck, I had to go back and count months on my fingers to accept that his mother was actually a statutory rape victim; she wasn’t 18 yet when she became pregnant with him. So this confusing thing gets swept under the bus rug. Except that every week, every time some news piece mentions Africa, we hear how thrilled the people there are that we in the USA actually have a President who was born in Africa. So the rumors don’t die.

Ok, here’s the latest. And it comes from World Net Daily. A paper that hasn’t had the best reputation for journalistic integrity in the past. But who can point that finger anymore? No paper seems to have much integrity anymore, and at least one of those gossip rags has broken a major story in the past that the “respected” papers wouldn’t touch. So where does that leave us?

BORN IN THE USA?
Is this really smoking gun of Obama’s Kenyan birth?
Attorney files motion for authentication of alleged 1960s certificate from Africa

California attorney
Orly Taitz, who has filed a number of lawsuits demanding proof of Barack Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, has released a copy of what purports to be a Kenyan certification of birth and has filed a new motion in U.S. District Court for its authentication.

The document lists Obama’s parents as Barack Hussein Obama and Stanley Ann Obama, formerly Stanley Ann Dunham, the birth date as Aug. 4, 1961, and the hospital
of birth as Coast General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya.

No doctor is listed. But the alleged certificate bears the signature of the deputy registrar of Coast Province, Joshua Simon Oduya. It was allegedly issued as a certified copy of the original in February 1964.

WND was able to obtain other birth certificates from Kenya for purposes of comparison, and the form of the documents appear to be identical.

...
Taitz told WND that the document came from an anonymous source who doesn’t want his name known because “he’s afraid for his life.”

Taitz’s motion, filed yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, requests the purported evidence of Obama’s birth – both the alleged birth certificate and foreign records not yet obtained – be preserved from destruction, asks for permission to legally request documents from Kenya and seeks a subpoena for deposition from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“I filed the motion with the court asking for expedited discovery, which would allow me to start subpoenas and depositions even before Obama and the government responds,” Taitz told WND. “I am asking the judge to give me the power to subpoena the documents from the Kenyan embassy and to require a deposition from Hillary Clinton so they will be forced to authenticate [the birth certificate].
...
Taitz’s most celebrated case involved a military officer, Maj. Stefan Cook, whose order to deploy to Afghanistan was revoked when he challenged Obama’s eligibility to hold office. That case has now been refiled in federal court in Florida, raising the specter of a class-action claim among members of the military that their orders aren’t valid because of questions surrounding Obama’s constitutional eligibility.
...
Named as defendants are Simtech, Cook’s former civilian employer, and several officials, including Col. Louis B. Wingate and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Here is the link. Pictures of an alleged real Kenyan birth certificate, embossed, numbered, and signed.

It looks like Taitz has a document, and he has a client with actual standing. So his case ought not to be dismissed out of hand, as so many of the other ones were.

The first problem, as I see it, is that the public has come to realize that nothing is true anymore, no document can be trusted as genuine, and that the media will lie, cheat, steal, and flout Fake But Accurate to achieve their goals. All the trust has been leeched from the system. Truth is not true unless you want it to be. OJ didn’t do it. (well, until he wrote a book saying how he did it). Bush lied. When he didn’t. Clinton was framed, because it was just sex and everybody lies about that. Bush stole the election. Twice! 9/11 was an inside job. The moon landing was faked. The Tet Offensive was a victory for North Vietnam and America was in an unwinnable war there. The lying liars and the lies they’ve told have worn away trust until it’s not even a shadow anymore. So who are you going to believe? Some faceless official in Hawaii, who claims a recent digital record is the real thing, supported by a web page that accepts a recent reprint as the original?

If the Kenyan allegation is correct, then we have an even bigger second problem. That would mean that Obama is a usurper, an illegitimate president. Now, how are you going to toss this guy out of office without massive amounts of blood in the streets? Because you know the inner cities will burn. You know that every black person in America is going to go apeshit. And half of the white people will somehow see this as a coup by those secret forces that really run the world - even though it would be a Democrat majority House and Senate doing the tossing. If all this high speed push to Socialism hasn’t brought the nation to the edge of violent revolution, giving a Kenyan the boot will do it. And the Red Banner will have it’s greatest martyr ever.

First shots of combat photography in new exhibition of Crimean War !!!!!!!!!!!!

How I wish I could get to London for the exhibition.  Be like 7th heaven to me. Crave this sort of thing and never get enough.

We have a newspaper in town that has published without interruption since 1772.  I love their archives of old woodcuts and especially when photography came into use.  Hey .. the paper today printed a tiny snapshot of a man who lived to 107, his name was Conrad Heyer, (1749-1856) and he crossed the Delaware with Washington.  DAMN!  I never knew the name of one person who was with Washington. Let alone see a photo of that person in later years.
That’s so unbelievable tho. 107?  No health and safety or info on cholesterol and fatty food and smoking etc.  Though mainly I know they died pretty young back then.

The Telegraph didn’t publish on line the other two photos.  Not as large or dramatic as this one so maybe it doesn’t matter.

The first shots of war ever captured by photographers are to appear in a new exhibition.

Entente Cordiale?, 1855 Photo: Roger Fenton
The pictures are taken from the Crimean War (1848-1856) and the Second Sikh War (1848) by four pioneers of photography, including Roger Fenton.

He was sent to the Crimea by Prince Albert in an attempt to alter public opposition to the war and was told before he departed for the frontline: “No dead bodies.”

His pictures were taken on glass plates and processed and printed in a converted wine merchant’s horse-drawn wagon. One picture of troops posing shows a group of British and French soldiers enjoying a drink and a smoke in an image called “L’Entente Cordiale”.

He was unable to photograph the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but documented the cannonball-strewn aftermath of the Valley of Death in 1855.

The work of James Robertson and Felice Beato is also going on show from the Crimean War.

Fought between the Russian Empire and an alliance of troops from Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire, it is considered the first “modern” conflict in terms of tactics, weaponry, communications and propaganda.

The earliest images on display are taken by Josh McCosh in 1848 during the war between the Sikh Empire and the British Empire in the Punjab.

The National Army Museum will be showcasing the work in the exhibition First Shots: Early War Photography 1848–1860 at the White Space Gallery in Chelsea, west London, next month

A spokesman said: “First Shots will document war photography in its infancy. Using some of the earliest photos in the museum’s collection it will explore what drove its pioneers, the technical, social and environmental pressures which shaped their work and the impact which the images they produced had upon culture and society”.

If nobody minds too much, as long as I’m banging on about olde photos and a bit of history, here’s a photo of my wife’s great, great uncle. He died seving in India at the age of 27, in 1911.
He was William Edward Gammon

Where politicians are concerned, you usually can’t go wrong in assuming the worst.  A. Tiger

That’s it folks.  That’s my first post for early Monday morning, and someone else wrote it for me. You may notice I did not post under humor. It’s too true for that.
Thanks Tiger.

Fight Spam

I’ve been out of town for a few days. I had to go help out family out of state. No emergency, just adding muscle and sweat to a home improvement project.

Anyway, I get back and I have a couple of emails concerning spam. We may have had a spam situation, wherein one very new member sent out at least one suspiciously spammish email to another member. If everybody got such an email ( I didn’t ) then BMEWS has been spam-hacked. I don’t think that is the case though.

SPAM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED HERE, AND SPAMMERS WILL BE DEALT WITH TERMINALLY. TERMINALLY!

Ok, here’s how the blog engine works. BMEWS members are allowed to send each other emails and messages. You can click on a user’s name in the comments and this blog will do the work for you. That way one user can contact another, and I’m pretty sure it protects your email address. (I’ve never tried it, but as Super Duper Admin I can do anything, so to test it I’d have to create 2 regular membership accounts, log on as one of them, and send an email one to the other via BMEWS. Hassle for me, much?) I have everyone’s email address, and I never send out spam. I sometimes reply directly to a member when they have made an especially good comment, or when they email me directly. [ I am still a couple weeks behind on my direct emails. Sorry.  ] Contact from me, the blog owner, or from Peiper, Mr. Christian, or one of our small cadre of highly trained and trusted cohorts, is not spam.

HOWEVER, some folks may feel that out-of-the-blue contact is spam. That is their right and I respect it. If you would prefer not to be contacted by other members, you can uncheck these 2 boxes in your membership profile:

uncheck “Accept email from other members of this site”, and then
uncheck “Notify me via email when someone sends me a private message”

and that should do it. I haven’t tested that either, but it seems right.

Should you make such changes, and then want to contact some other BMEWS member, you’ll probably have to go through me as an intermediary. And I’ll do for you a couple of times, but that’s about it. Don’t be uncheckin if you wants to be emailin.

I know that once or twice in the past we’ve had a small bit of annoyance when one member contacts another “out of school” ... typical flame wars kind of stuff. That isn’t what I’m talking about here today. You know spam when you see it.

So ... if you feel you have received spam from someone here in the past 3 or 4 days, write me an email and say whodunnit. If I get the same name twice - 2 spams sent - that’s a guilty verdict and the axe falls. Actually, Peiper will be manning the guillotine this time, as he has needs the practice. No worries, we keep the blade sharp. Well, mostly sharp.

Off with their Spam!

DOING MY BIT TO HELP THE TREE HUGERS. NOT. JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER CASE OF 50, 100W BULBS.

Yeah, I’m still buying and hoarding.  I got 40 Brit type bayonet bulbs and 10 American screw type. Called Edison bulbs here.
So that’s 100 I’ve bought added to the heaven knows how many already saved.

I think I need some 75Watt as well.  Can’t remember exactly why though. But hey ... since the EU has ruled and the Brits have gone along with it, I need to make certain I have enough to last till the day we can get the heck outta here. And that might be two years down the road.  Damn, at my age that’s a life sentence.

So while we’re on planet saving ...... and the hoax of things gween ...........

Here’s my favorite Climate Change guru on unmasking the hoax of the church of Bore.  The greens hate him so you know we have to love the guy.

Oh. btw. The MET office mentioned here is the weather bureau in our terms.  And for the official Peiper Flannel PJs journal, which I just made up.

In the entire month of July there weren’t more then maybe 7 nights that I wore cotten as it got that cool at night the rest of that month. Which is nice. Am still wearing flannel here in August although I admit I have changed from the heavier flannel to the lighter weight flannel.  Hope it stays this way the rest of the summer coz we have no air cond. here. When it does get hot, it gets very much so and humid too.

Weather records are a state secret
The IPCC’s computer models have proved just as wrong in predicting global temperatures as the Met Office has been in forecasting those mild winters and heatwave summers, says Christopher Booker.

By Christopher Booker
Telegraph

Everyone has enjoyed the discomfiture of the Met Office, caught out over its April forecast that we were in for a “barbecue summer” – not least because this is the third year running that our weathermen have got their predictions for both summer and winter hopelessly wrong. In 2007 and 2008 they forecast that summers would be warmer and drier, and winters milder than average – just before temperatures plunged and the heavens opened, deluging us with abnormal rain or snow according to season.

One cause of the blunders that have made the Met Office a laughing stock is less widely appreciated, however. It is that the multi-million pound ($) computer it uses to assist its short-term forecasting for Britain is also one of the four main official sources of data used by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to predict global warming. In this respect the IPCC’s computer models have proved just as wrong in predicting global temperatures as the Met Office has been in forecasting those mild winters and heatwave summers.

Back in 1990, Mrs Thatcher, temporarily under the spell of the prophets of runaway global warming, authorised lavish funding for the then-head of the Met Office, Sir John Houghton, to set up its Hadley Centre in Exeter, as a “world-class centre for research into climate change”. It was linked to the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, to create a record of global temperatures based on surface weather stations across the world, a data set known as HadCrut. Sir John himself played a key role at the top of the new IPCC as chairman of its scientific working group.

Sir John was a fervent believer in the theory that the cause of global warming is man-made CO2, and the HadCrut computer models, run by his CRU ally Professor Phil Jones, were programmed accordingly. Sir John (and the Hadley Centre) continued to play a central part in the running of the IPCC, selecting many of the contributors to its reports that were the main driver of global warming alarm. He and Prof Jones were also prominent champions of the IPCC’s notorious “hockey stick” graph, which rewrote climate history by suggesting that global temperatures had suddenly shot up in the late 20th century to easily their highest level in history.

In recent years, however, the whole theory has come under increasing fire because, as CO2 levels continue to rise, temperatures have failed to follow suit as the IPCC’s computer models predicted they should. Part of the reason why the Met Office has made such a mess of its forecasts for Britain is that they are based on the same models which failed to predict the declining trend in world temperatures since 2001.

In recent months, in fact, a curious little drama has been unfolding over attempts by Steve McIntyre, a Canadian statistical expert, to get the Met Office and the CRU to divulge the computer data on which they base their temperature record. Mr McIntyre was not only the chief demolisher of the “hockey stick”, showing how it was based on a seriously skewed computer model, but later exposed the “adjustments” which had skewed the other official record of surface temperatures, run by Dr James Hansen of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. (The two other official sources of temperature data are based on satellite measurements.)

When Mr McIntyre made Freedom of Information requests to see the data used to construct the HadCrut record (as he has chronicled on his ClimateAudit blog) he was given an almighty brush-off, the Met Office saying that this information was strictly confidential and that to release it would damage Britain’s “international relations” with all the countries that supplied it.

The idea that temperature records might be a state secret seems strange enough, but when the policies of governments across the world are based on that data it becomes odder still that no outsider should be allowed to see it. Weirdest of all, however, is the Met Office’s claim that to release the data would “damage the trust that scientists have in those scientists who happen to be employed in the public sector”.

Doesn’t the Met Office realise that trust in it has already been damaged enough by its batty predictions of “barbecue summers”? If it wants to restore that trust, it should first come clean about its data, and then reprogramme its computer to give us forecasts that are not skewed by its obsession with global warming – which is not happening.

A refuge for battered women is to be closed down because it doesn’t cater for men.

The safe haven has provided emergency shelter for more than 1,000 abused woman and children over the past 14 years.

But its doors will now shut forever after council managers realised it did not serve men and women equally.

The shelter, in Weymouth, Dorset, currently has enough beds to shelter six families affected by domestic violence.

No adult men are permitted to stay in the refuge, which is intended to protect physically and emotionally battered women.

Managers now believe money would be better spent helping domestic violence victims of both sexes to stay in their homes.

They will be helped by an “outreach service” which aims to keep more people in their own homes.

But the move has angered women domestic violence campaigners.

Brian Ellis, a local councillor who helped set up the refuge in 1986, said: “It doesn’t make sense.

“The women who use the refuge are there because of what men have done to them and their children.

“When people suffer from domestic violence they need an escape route so it’s just incredible that this decision has been taken.

“They need an immediate escape and that’s what’s being taken away.”

A spokeswoman for Refuge, a charity for women and children affected by domestic violence, said: “There are not enough refuges for women who need help as it is.

“It’s already pretty difficult to get help and women often have to travel long distances to get it.

“Losing beds that are already there is really devastating. It is a whole community that has lost that kind of safety.”

The Weymouth refuge costs £82,780 a year to run and is funded by a number of local councils.

It will close in March 2010 when women will be moved to different accommodation or sent home.

Over the past year a total of 6,323 people have reported domestic violence to Dorset Police.

A spokeswoman for Dorset County Council confirmed one of the reasons for closure was the lack of facilities for men.

She said: “We are not going to be opening up a refuge for men and women.

“Some people would rather stay in their own settings than be moved away and put in a refuge.

“We want to make sure that men and women are both catered for and at the moment we are not able to do that within the small building.”

stupid fuckin dickhead. so close the place putting women who need it just where? Sure. Send em home where they’ll feel safe.  Jeez this kinda stupidity just makes me see red.
Exactly how many men are in need of a shelter like this and how many women who have been abused, along with their kids, will feel safe and trusting with too many guys around them.
What the ‘F’ is it with this place?  About when did they lose all sense of logic?  What? Did I miss something? Did I misunderstand this?

Six Christians, including four women, were burnt alive on a rumor of disrespect to the koran.

I just came across this.  It’s happened before of course.
Too dumbstruck for words.

Six Christians, including four women, were burnt alive in clashes with majority Muslims in a town in central Pakistan yesterday, officials said.

Tension has been running high between the two communities in Gojra town in central Punjab province over allegations that Christians had desecrated a Koran.

Clashes erupted early yesterday, with an exchange of fire between members of both communities.

Television footage showed burning houses and streets strewn with blackened furniture and people firing at each other from their rooftops.

Shahbaz Bhatti, minister for minorities, said a mob “misled by religious extremists”, attacked a Christian neighbourhood and torched dozens of houses.

“We have received six bodies of people who died of burn injuries. They included four women, one man and one child,” Abdul Hamid, a health ministry official in the town said. Rana Sanaullah, provincial minister for law, who is also responsible for security matters of Punjab, condemned the attack and said an inquiry had been ordered.

However, he said, a preliminary investigation showed there was no desecration of the Koran.

“It was just a rumour which was exploited by anti-state elements to create chaos,” he said.

“I request both Muslim and Christian communities to show restraint.” He said the government would take strict action against rioters and police who failed to stop this kind of violence.

Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim nation and religious minorities, including Christians, account for roughly 4 per cent of the 170 million population.

There have been periodic attacks on Christian targets since Pakistan became a US ally following the September 11 attacks on the US in 2001.

OH DEAR. THE HORSES HAVE ALL BEEN STOLEN.  QUICK … LETS LOCK THE BARN DOORS NOW!

Jeesh ..
Yeah, yeah. Same old same old isn’t it? BUT .... Maybe this time it’s real?  Maybe somebody, somewhere is waking up?  Or is will things simply remain after a few news headlines.  Guess we’ll have to wait and see.  And btw, why should this be highly controversial to begin with?  Do these folks have some kind of god given right to be here in the first place?

Stay Tuned.

Crackdown on 80,000 immigrant wives with free pass to Britain

A highly controversial crackdown on immigrants accused of abusing welfare handouts is to be unveiled by Home Secretary Alan Johnson this week.

He plans to ban wives brought here, mainly from India and Pakistan, from receiving child benefit and a wide range of other state aid unless they learn English, support British values and do voluntary work in the community.

The move could affect up to 80,000 immigrants who are allowed to settle permanently in Britain each year after marrying a UK citizen.

Many come from remote villages in the subcontinent, have little formal education and cannot speak a word of English. Under existing laws, they are automatically given indefinite leave to remain after just two years.

Crucially, that qualifies them to receive state benefits, even if they never become British citizens with UK passports or learn English.

However, Mr Johnson wants to scrap indefinite leave to remain. He intends to force immigrants who use marriage to get into the UK to take a citizenship test. They will not be allowed to take it for at least five years and if they fail, they will be banned from receiving benefits.

Ministers are braced for allegations of racism from some ethnic-minority leaders but they argue that the reforms are vital to curb racial tensions and benefit scrounging.

A well-placed Government source said: ‘Some British men with Indian or Pakistani backgrounds marry young women from the Indian subcontinent who are close to illiterate and unable to speak English.

‘Once they are here, they have children and can get the same benefits as someone who has lived here for a generation.

‘Some never learn a word of English and remain separate from the rest of the community. In effect, they choose to remain foreigners.

‘Why should they or their husbands worry? They are getting state benefits, and in some cases that is the only reason they come here, or are brought here. We have to put a stop to it

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
