Time Flys

You know things are getting lame in MSM-ville when TIME magazine starts counting down the days left in the Bush administration. In this weeks’s cover story, no less ...

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

tune  Pink Floyd, “Time” tune

Now Playing

On screen at The Argoknot ....

I’ve been busy over at the other blog, adding a new Photo Gallery and uploading about a dozen pictures to get it configured and setup for viewing and commenting. I’ve got a few personal pictures and some shots taken during my travels. Not much yet but I’ll add more over the coming weeks. I need to shake the dust off my scanner and digitize some of my pre-digital 35mm stuff. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time.

While you’re there, take a run through some of the editorials from myself and the team of Argoknotniks ....

Blog Top 10 Lists

One of our readers wrote me and asked about BMEWS statistics as to which posts had the most comments. This intrigued me so much that I threw together a few SQL queries to bang against the database and just find out. Not surprisingly, the most commented post was about social security and involved Z Woof, OldCatMan and a few others getting into a brawl with a troll.

While I was at it, I decided to see who had posted those 6,644 posts over the last 2+ years as well as the breakdown of who commented most out of those 44,072 comments you folks have dropped here. Here are the three Top Ten Lists for your examination. OldCatMan and Oink win the Blabbermouth Trophy™. OCM gets the really big trophy and Oink has to settle for the Silver Medal. Yours truly gets the Bronze. Unless you add the number of posts to the number of comments I’ve managed to spew out here then I guess I get the victory lap and the Bloviating Bullshit Artist Award™. I couldn’t have done it without ... oh, never mind ....

Thousands in Northeast Still Without Power
February 19, 2006, 6:59 AM EST
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP)

A deep freeze stretched from Arkansas to New York as workers tried to restore power to 200,000 homes and businesses left dark by fierce winds that were also blamed in four deaths. The storm carried a wave of bitterly cold air as it swept out of the Midwest, prompting temperatures in western New York to plunge from 60 degrees to below freezing within hours.

Winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour Sunday made the temperature feel like it was below zero, said National Weather Service meteorologist Steve McLaughlin. Parts of Arkansas had 5.5 inches of snow Saturday and freezing temperatures extended across the state. Hayward, Wis., had a Saturday morning low of 26 below zero, and daytime highs in the Upper Midwest reached only the single digits.

On Friday, wind of more than 60 mph buffeted the Rochester area and a 77-mph gust was recorded at the city’s airport, the weather service said. The frigid temperatures forced officials in Madison, Wis., which had a high 3 degrees on Saturday, to cancel the “Polar Plunge” into a lake, a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. “We first really realized it was a problem when we cut the hole this morning and it immediately skimmed over with ice,” Cheryl Balazs of the Special Olympics told WKOW-TV.

Utility officials in New York said crews would work through the weekend to restore power to about 85,000 customers, down from at least 328,000 customers who were blacked out Friday. Thousands of customers were also without power in Michigan, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, where the National Weather Service reported a wind gust of 143 mph on Stratton Mountain.

Several states opened shelters, providing havens with light and heat for those without power. “Most people tough it out the first night and then come in the second night,” said Mark Bosma, spokesman for Vermont Emergency Management. The wind toppled many trees, including one in Billerica, Mass., that killed the driver of a pickup.

A falling tree crushed a car outside Rochester, killing a 52-year-old woman, and another killed a state worker in a truck at Saratoga Spa State Park. East of Rochester, a man was killed when his vehicle slammed into a tractor-trailer rig whose driver had stopped to clear storm debris from his windshield. Wind also knocked out a 12th-floor window in a high-rise office building in Syracuse, and falling debris barely missed passers-by, police said.

Headline Of The Week

To paraphrase President Bush, “is our reporters learning how to write?” How many “fatal” accidents can a person have? Well, unless one is a cat I believe the limit is one. Cats have more than one life to burn because unlike buttered toast, they always land right-side up. While we’re on the subject of toast, what are the chances this cop’s career in law enforcement is about over ... ?

imageimageOfficer’s Fatal Accident Is His Second
February 13, 2006
(LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL)

A Louisville Metro Police officer who was driving the wrong way with his lights and siren on just before he was involved in a fatal crash was also involved in a deadly car accident in 1999. Jason Matthew Brown struck and killed William O’Bannon on the Watterson Expressway next to Crittenden Drive on Oct. 18, 1999.

O’Bannon, 74, of 920 S. 18th St., was standing behind his truck in the median after running out of gas when Brown’s pickup crashed into him, police said at the time. Brown, then 17, was not charged or cited. The announcement of that fatal accident comes the same day The Courier-Journal reported that Brown had a history of traffic violations before joining the force in 2004.

In four traffic stops between 1998 and 2001, Brown was charged with reckless driving, running a traffic light, disregarding a stop sign, having expired plates, failing to produce his insurance card and speeding. Brown pleaded guilty to disregarding a traffic light and a stop sign in separate 1998 incidents, and driving 18 mph over the speed limit in 2001. A reckless driving charge in 1998 was amended, with the condition he attend traffic school.

An expired registration charge, seat-belt infraction and failure to produce an insurance card citation all were dismissed in 2001. Brown, 24, also was charged in 2000 with alcohol possession by a minor, but that charge was later dismissed. On Jan. 30 of this year, Brown was rushing to the 2200 block of Cedar Street to help an officer pursuing a fleeing drug suspect. His lights and siren on, Brown drove the wrong way down Dr. W.J. Hodge Street (formerly 21st Street) and collided with a Mitsubishi driven by Derek Butler at the Market Street intersection.

Butler, 38, of the 1200 block of South Floyd Street, died at the scene of multiple blunt-force injuries. Brown was treated for a hand injury at University Hospital and released. A man driving a Ford Explorer, whom police have not identified, also was injured. Brown is on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation.

Cops Receive Complaint Of ‘Mediocre Cannabis’
February 18 2006 at 12:10PM
SOUTH AFRICA (IOL)

A cannabis smoker has been arrested after complaining to police that he was sold bad weed. Hans-Juergen Bendt, 52, from Darmstadt, lodged a complaint about his dealer with police after he sold him seven ounces of “completely unenjoyable” hash.

Bendt complained the dealer refused to refund him the £270 (about R2816) he had paid for the drugs.

But despite the official complaint, in which Bendt described himself as a victim of “fraud” involving drugs of “absolutely mediocre quality”, the officers failed to act upon the allegations and booked the complainant instead.

He is now being charged for the illegal purchase and possession of narcotic substances.

Soup To Nuts

Let’s say you’re moving to my town and you call me and ask if you can stay with me while you look for work. Feeling in a charitable mood, I fix up my spare bedroom and set you up in a nice warm place with all the modern conveniences.

After several weeks, you haven’t found a job after a few half-hearted attempts, mainly because you feel the jobs you are offered are beneath you. Then you start throwing temper tantrums at me and damaging the spare bedroom because you can’t find a job. Finally, you start calling me a racist because my refrigerator and pantry are full of food you refuse to eat.

Guess what? You’re about to have your ass thrown out onto the street AFTER getting the living crap beaten out of you. That’s the way we do things here in my house.

In the house of France, however, things are handled differently. That’s because frogs have no balls ....

France’s ‘Racist’ Soup Kitchens Shut Down
February 19, 2006
PARIS (UK TELEGRAPH)

The temperature on the street had dropped to minus three and the homeless stood in knots of two or three, blowing on their hands to relieve the bitter cold, as plastic bowls of steaming soupe au cochon were prepared.

“Hot wine?” asked the elegant blonde woman behind the table. But before anything could be served, the police arrived flourishing an order from the local authorities in Strasbourg to shut down the mobile soup kitchen.

The scene has been repeated all over France in recent weeks after complaints that extreme Right-wing groups have been serving “racist” food. As a result of the closures, hundreds of homeless people will go hungry. The groups giving out the soup say it is nothing more than traditional French cuisine.

Angry protesters retort, however, that they are deliberately offering ham sandwiches and soup made of pork to discriminate against Muslims and Jews who cannot eat the meat for religious reasons. The groups behind the soup kitchens are not formally linked, but they are associated with an ultra Right-wing organisation called Bloc Identitaire.

Officials say the groups are not breaking the law. In Strasbourg and Nice, however, food handouts have been banned on the grounds that they could lead to “public disorder”. In Paris, police have stopped the serving of pork soup at major stations on “administrative grounds” - because the soup kitchens have not got the correct papers - to avoid racial tensions. Fabienne Keller, the Mayor of Strasbourg, said: “Schemes with racial subtexts must be denounced.”

Chantal Spieler, the blonde serving soup in Strasbourg as president of the charity Solidarité Alsacienne, was defiant. “For as long as there are people who are hungry and cold I will disobey this unfair decision,” she said. Even Lhaj Thanmi Breze, president of the Union of Islamic Organisations in France, disagreed with closing the soup kitchens, although he regretted that they were serving pork.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
