  2. Well, bowling and archery equipment are both mostly still made in the USA. And you know you never have enough arrows.

  3. The services in this country make up a huge portion of our GNP.  You know cops, lawyers, doctors, fireman, garbageman.............you get the picture?  You could pay off any one of these or others to keep the cash in the states.

  6. Or, you can keep the money in the states AND prepare for bad possibilities in November by going out and buying a fine new American-made firearm, or buy a used firearm of any nationality from a fellow American.

You’ve got $1200? Somewhere out there is an AR-15 with your name on it.

  7. While I would love to get a fine American-made firearm, right now there’s my almost seven month-old daughter to worry about.  Her day care place, a good Christian day care run by an RN who knows my in-laws (as it turned out), employs some good people.  My check went right there, this morning--and I’m paid up until the end of July.

However, there’s at least one shotgun and a (single) muzzleloader in my future.

  8. cool- alot of gunnies are using them for firearms, specifically stuff they expect to see banned if there is a new AWB come next year.

  9. If you’re only getting $300 back you might want to look into getting Mossberg Shotgun “Just in Case” kit. They list about $309 - $359 (your dealer price may vary).

The heart of the JIC™ package is the venerable 12 gauge Mossberg® 500® Pump-Action. Fitted with a compact 18-1/2” barrel and rugged synthetic pistol grip and forearm, it’s offered in your choice of the blued Cruiser® model, the Mariner®, or the Sandstorm™ featuring our proprietary Marinecote™ finish for employment in or around harsh marine environments. Each is sealed in a re-sealable clear bag, and is packaged in a heavy-duty, waterproof synthetic carrying-tube complete with re-sealable top and nylon carrying strap. You’ll also find convenient accessories including the waterproof ‘Survival Kit-In-A-Can’ (Cruiser® model), or the durable multi-tool and serrated lock-back knife combo pack with cordura case (Mariner® model).

They have all kinds of goodies for survival just in case things go seriously south.  Considering that’s far too large a gauge for me I’m thinking along the lines of a 410 youth model (works with my body size) with interesting loads.  That way, should a goblin be so ill-advised as to try to enter without permission I can reach out and touch him.

  10. I would argue the point that the equation of good car = japanese is no longer a set in stone guaranteed sure thing. Many of them are made in the states nowadays but I don’t mean to slam the folks that build then either. It’s just that there’s a bottom line for every business to meet and increasing costs mean making (ahem) “adjustments” to maintain it. Staying on the subjects of cars, I’ll state for the record that I got the hots for the new Caddy CTS but GM and their dealer network is doing its level best to keep me from parting with over 40K bucks. “Buy American?”, hell I’m trying !.
And if you can’t, thank NAFTA and the US government.

  11. I’d thank the unions long before I thanked either of your choices.

  12. Valgerd, give the 20 gauge a try. It kicks a whole lot less than a 12, and at house-gun distances does an equal job. Save the pistol grip crap for Rambo. A regular stock isn’t going to impede your movement hardly at all.

I’d suggest getting the Mossberg 505 Youth. Then check the laws for minimum overall gun length (usually 26") and minimum shotgun barrel length (usually 18"), and have a gunsmith bob the barrel if you feel the need. The 505 is only 37 1/2” long to beging with, and that’s with a 20” barrel.

If you cut the barrel to 18.5” you’d have a gun just 3 feet long. Just be very careful that the barrel is measured properly when cutting it.

My solution would be to find a plain wood, plain barrel 20g at a gunshop, and just cut the stock down to 12” LOP. Or order the youth stock and screw it on. You can find them for $100 just about everywhere.

  13. Drew, I appreciate your suggestion.  However, I’m unable to act on it.  I’d bought a youth model Mossberg 20 gauge and my husband (a former FFL holder) tried it before allowing me to shoot it as I’m disabled.  He reported it kicked like a mule and that it was a good thing I hadn’t fired it as doing so would have kicked the **** out of me.

I hear you on pistol grip and that fracking grip on the Mossberg HS 410.  There’s a regular stock on that gun and the pistol grip is what’s used on the pump!  Totally useless at best and a serious problem at worst should you need to fire a couple of shots in swift succession.

I’m thinking that 00 Buck in a home security situation should do the trick nicely.  Plus, we’ve got some other ideas for loads that should get the attention of any would-be goblin very quickly if the chunk, chunk of a shell being chambered doesn’t do the trick.

I’m concerned about cutting down the barrel of a shotgun as that could easily cut off the choke thus seriously disturbing the shot pattern.  I don’t want to risk taking out my birds due to that if I’m repelling a home invasion.

Therefore, I really don’t see any other option than a 410 gauge unless you know of a shotgun which has minimal kick.  If so, I’m open to suggestions.

  14. A new .45 cal to go with my CCW. If I’m lucky the tax refund will be in about the same time and it pays for an M1A.
