  1. Yep, didn’t think those commie SAMs could reach that altitude, OOPS…

  2. Of course I do.

    What do you think was the genesis of the SR-71?

    Three very good books about both the U-2 Series and the SR’s are;

    Skunk Works—Ben Rich & Leo Janos

    Kelly- More Than My Share of It All—Clarence L. ‘Kelly’ Johnson with Maggie Smith.

    SR-71 Revealed:The Inside Story—Richard Graham

    All are available at Amazon.com and are very inexpensive.

    GREAT books!

    Just my $.02.

  3. Can’t help thinking you get better info from an unscheduled visit at 80,000 feet than from a scheduled visit at 500,000 feet.

    I remember Nikita Kruschev ending a summit meeting with Ike over the Powers shootdown, when Ike took responsibility for the overflight.  Somebody like Clinturd would have replied in passive voice “mistakes were made.” There were giants once....

  4. Not old enough to remember, but I am enough of a student of history to know what happend. It shocks me that this chapter of the cold war seems to slip people’s memory banks.

  5. I did a sceince report in 7th grade on the U2, used a Revell model with an alteration kit to turn it into the correct revision for Powers’ (IIRC, a U-2C)

  6. I caught the end of a news report about Lockheed bringing out some funky high altitude blimp! I’m sure it wasn’t April 1st. The U2 and it’s derivatives are not what you would call elegant. Functional I suppose. Anyway what about this Aurora project you chaps have that used to terrify the natives in Scotland a few years back? What became of that?

  7. Don’t squeeze the silver dollar, kid!

  8. Awww what a pretty plane. Seems a shame to get rid of it (I’m still smarting over the fact that they retired the SR-71)

    Most of my knowledge on the Cold War came from HS (back when they actually gave a damn in history classes). It kills me that people want to get rid of our submarines with the premise that ‘Russia’s gone, so we don’t have to worry about their submarines’ Which I reply with ‘Yeah Russia’s gone but it’s the countries that THEY SOLD THEIR SUBS TO that we have to worry about!’

    Tends to shut them up REAL fast.
