  1. "There is nothing we can do for the 700 or 800 farmers affected,” says Monsier Leemeew (I think that’s how you pronounce it).

Aaaaw c’mon mr. Leemooo, I’m sure there’s some kinda Gov. payoff you can give ‘em.  Euros for locusts.

  3. I assume they mean millions or billions of locusts. But that is a quibble. Good luck to the farmers.

Some insecticides are wisely removed from use. And some effective medicines cannot be used without special authorization. But it is foolish to totally say “never, ever”. On rare occasions nothing else will work.

Many of these banned chemicals were used for decades before restriction. The world survived and the affected areas recovered faster than expected.

Locust plagues are a great wild card in world agriculture. They come, nearly impossible to fight, then go, sometimes for decades.

  4. Hmm, they must have done something to piss off the seagulls. They’d eat those critters. I believe they did it for the Mormons in Utah. Of course, there was some faith involved there too…

  5. Frogs eat bugs, right? Locusts should be manna from heaven for them.

  6. Don’t you know that story, OCM?

Seagulls Saving the Crops: In June of 1848, the region suffered a severe cricket plague and the pioneers were faced with losing all their wheat. Miraculously, flocks of seagulls consumed and then regurgitated the crickets. The seagulls continued this process until they saved the crops. The Seagull is Utah’s State Bird…

    Now you know. grin
