  1. Them Somali pirates sure go a long way from home.  How do they operate in such a small area with the US Navy and possibly the British Navy right there?  Are they that good?

  2. Not good, “lucky”.

    I predict:

The Iranian regime will not acknowledge the American effort and most likely will execute the “freed” fisherman for putting the Iranian government is such a odious position.

  4. Somalian Pirate bases should be annihilated. Preferably from orbit.

  7. It strikes me that chaos and lawlessness in the area serve the Iranians purpose.  Somehow, I don’t think they wanted to stop the pirates.

At some points the Strait of Hormuz is about 40 miles wide, roughly twice the distance from Catalina Island to Los Angeles (the song saying 26 miles is incorrect).  There are some islands there as well.  Take a sharp look at them both with Google Maps.  It’s not as wide an area as many descriptions make it sound.  By-the-way, from San Pedro on the West side of Los Angeles harbor, Catalina looks close enough to hit with a rock.  The Iranians are perfectly positioned to create serious problems there any time they want.  Missiles and mines from the Iranian mainland and small vessels could do the job nicely.

There’s no doubt that the U.S. Navy could blow them all to hell, but it would be an interesting example of asymmetric warfare with serious world wide consequences.

  9. Dr. Jeff,

A puny kid with a damned stone can bring down the greatest giant. Since all metaphores fall apart at some point, this David vs Goliath battle will be on-going if joined. Yes, we can make Persian sushi out of the Iranian navy, but they can get the occasional rock through. Too bad Dear Leader, the scum, decided to throw the Iranian opposition to the wolves and let them be slaughtered rather than help them over throw the fucking mullahs and Ahmadinnerhjacket, piss be upon him for eternity. With our aid, they might have made the situation different than what it is today. No Arab Spring that would bring Islamists to power, but quite the opposite. What more Islamist can there be than the pig vomits in Teheran?
