  1. Hate to sound like grandpa, but you betcha, the winter of 78-79 was severe. We were out ice skating the week after Halloween. Major snows in the northeast, lots of accumulation.

They don’t make winters like that here in NJ anymore.

  2. Oh yeah.... lived in Columbus OH during the 78-79 blizzard.  My Ford Pinto used to skim on top of the snow banks and my wife got blown across the apartment parking lot several times in the 40+mph winds with -60F wind chills.  You could feel the cold radiating inward from the walls.  I finally threw up my hands (well with the onset of early-adult arthritis in my 20’s it was more like flung around my hands) and moved to Florida in the late 80s.

I certainly don’t miss the winters up there....

  3. Funny, reminded me a little bit of a jeep commercial.

  4. I um seemed to have missed that - I was in ‘early morning fog, possible rain, sunny afternoon with a high of 70’ CA at that time. If it was Jan-Mar ‘78 - I was also very preggy, just been told it was twins and shooting for an all time land-whale size competition. If it was Nov-Dec - well we just found out we’d be headed back to OK. Fun.

We had a snow like that in KY when we were living there - our Akita mix was no Bailey - he walked off the back porch into my flower beds to do his business and then came right back in . No snow dog at all.

  5. But Wardmom,an Akita is a snow dog. Except yours I guess. World class diggers. Surprised you even had a flower bed.

Christopher ... That was a very funny clip. Never seen that one before but it has to be classic. Thank you.

  6. I’d just moved to Flint, Michigan to take my first real job in 76, and was living in a basement apartment when that storm hit. My car, a big hunk of 70’s Detroit iron, not some wussy import, was buried up to the deck lid by snow.... not the drifting kind either! I was stuck there for about 3 days. Finally, I was getting low on food, so I put on the big boots & backpack and walked over to the Kroger store. It was a hoot to see snowmobiles with trailers loading groceries in the parking lot & scooting down the 4-lane highway next door. There were even a couple pair of cross-country skis propped up against the wall.

The local radio stations were broadcasting appeals for owners of 4wd vehicles to help get patients and medical staff to local hospitals… I got a call from work telling me the mainframe had powered off and they needed me to restart it. When I said I was snowed in, they offered to send a plant protection guy in a 4wd out to get me. I was able to talk them thru the restart over the phone though…

I just saw on the Flint Expatriates blog that the entire AC Sparkplug plant where I worked has been razed.... sad…

  7. Oh my - the blizzard of ‘78 - what memories...........My family & I were living in Rhode Island & the entire state was paralyzed for a whole week during that blizzard.  I was working at a hospital 25 miles away - now the hospital sent out 4 wheel jeeps to bring employees in but they weren’t about to come out 25 miles to get me, so I didn’t work for a whole week.  We lost power but we had wood to burn, so we camped out in sleeping bags in front of the fireplace.  We cooked over the gas grill & had lots of canned goods to eat - tuna, soup, etc.  I always kept powdered milk on hand during the R.I. winters which could be mixed with water, so my boys had milk to drink.  Since then, there were a few more severe snowstorms that we lived through, but we were always comfortable because we were always prepared for the worst...........Since I been in St. Louis since 1984, there has been only a couple of years where we’ve been snowbound for a day or two - the natives go ballistic, but what is a day or two? No problem for me..............
