  1. Awesome!  All unions should face the same fate.

  2. Holey crap! If you read the comments of the students and parents further on, they blame THEMSELVES and the students!! What the hell? “It’s because the students are lazy”?? The Union is, of course, going to fight this as far as they can take it, probably putting a court mandated hold on the firings and costing the school board a considerable chunk of lawyer fees. I hope it stands, and I cheer for Superintendent Gallo, and hope a lot of schools follow her lead.
I don’t know about most people, but if I do a job with piss-poor results, I would be fired. I believe the results of a teacher’s job should be a little bit BETTER than 7%.

I hope this stands. Fuck the Teacher’s Union.

  3. I am shocked - it is about time that someone took on the teachers unions and stopped this strangle hold that the unions have on the most important natural resource America has - her children.

Get back to basics - Reading, wRiting & aRithmetic - after every single student gets those - add civics, science, history and speech - then you can go into the other things Art, PE, Music etc - Tolerance, Sex Ed and other pc NEA crap is not education - it’s Indoctrination and needs to be out of the K-12 educational system NOW.

I need to track this superintendent down and send him a Way To Go email. Ours (and we have a really good school system 97%+ graduation rate - extremely high college attendance rate) won’t even return calls and passes letters on to subordinates - at $100k a year - what a gig, if you can get it.

  4. That’s your opinion OCM. Children may be born not knowing anything, but that doesn’t make them stupid.

What makes them stupid is their parents and their culture denigrating the learning experience, telling them to shut up when they ask questions, and having no role models that show that learning has benefits. To that mix I would also add a lack of challenge. When the bar is set so low that you have to dig a ditch to put it in, students get bored with school and tune out. Little minds are a nice soft sponge. You can pour in lots of information and watch them swell up. But if they only get a trickle, and life teaches them that that trickle has a bad taste, then they will soon harden and stop absorbing.

Wardmama - superintendent Gallo is a she:

CENTRAL FALLS –– The teachers didn’t blink.

Under threat of losing their jobs if they didn’t go along with extra work for not a lot of extra pay, the Central Falls Teachers’ Union refused Friday morning to accept a reform plan for one of the worst-performing high schools in the state.

    The superintendent didn’t blink either.

After learning of the union’s position, School Supt. Frances Gallo notified the state that she was switching to an alternative she was hoping to avoid: firing the entire staff at Central Falls High School. In total, about 100 teachers, administrators and assistants will lose their jobs.

Gallo blamed the union’s “callous disregard” for the situation, saying union leaders “knew full well what would happen” if they rejected the six conditions Gallo said were crucial to improving the school. The conditions are adding 25 minutes to the school day, providing tutoring on a rotating schedule before and after school, eating lunch with students once a week, submitting to more rigorous evaluations, attending weekly after-school planning sessions with other teachers and participating in two weeks of training in the summer.

Many of us have (or had) salaried jobs. When you get told you have to work some extra time, that’s what you do. Period. When your 40 hour job turns into a 50 hours job every week, either ask for a raise or look for another job.

  5. No, I didn’t miss your point at all: you’ve got it 100% ass-backwards. Born unknowing, but stupid by choice. And absolutely by education. Government schools turn out people who can not think, reason, do math without a calculator, who can’t spell, can’t write, have piss poor handwriting, no sense of history, no love of country, can’t read maps, have no ability to stand on their own two feet ... and the list goes on. The Dumbing Down has been going on for generations, hand in hand with the leftist group think. Any one of these benighted kids could prattle on by the hour about how bad America is blah blah blah and how wonderful Socialism is yadda yadda yah. And they didn’t show up in the maternity ward with those thoughts in their heads.

  8. I too disagree with OCM, all babies are equal (except maybe the offspring of addicts, they are disadvantaged hugely) the parents start disabling them then the school system takes over. I have a 5 year old and I am working on not letting him go under.
