The Associated Press account says the firearm discharged while the aircraft was “...on approach to land in North Carolina”
Okay, those of us who handle firearms know guns just don’t ‘go off’. Something has to make them fire. Usually something associated with touching the trigger in my training, experience and study. (But who am I?)
Those of us who handle firearms on a regular basis have the knowledge loading and unloading a firearm is the most dangerous procedure in handling a firearm. So, the TSA program allowing pilots to carry firearms DEMAND firearms be loaded and unloaded in the cockpit. Not only that, but the ‘securing’ routine (for putting the pistol away in the carry case) includes locking up the pistol with a little padlock.
So my suspicion is the unhappy pilot was unloading his pistol when he somehow discharged it.
The firearm used in the program is a Heckler and Koch .40 S&W caliber pistol; I’m not sure of the trigger configuration.
Once again, negative news about firearms hits the popular media. Stand by for the wave of critics - the anti-gun, twisted panty, sissified pack who feel we would all be safer if we simply surrendered to evil - demanding this program be stopped and firearms be confined to ‘those who are specially trained’. Who would suspect?
