Employers DO Have Every Right

  1. There are limits to “The Boss’” right to control your off-the-job behavior. We have discussed, for example, smoking.  Badmouthing the company is well within those limits.

They can also fire you for being an asshole in areas not related to the business.  MCI decided they didn’t want a leaky asshole like Danny Glover to be their spokesman.  big surprise  Mike Tyson doesn’t seem to do many endorsements.

  2. I THINK IF THAT BLOG WAS ON HIS OWN TIME AND USING HIS OWN RESOURCES, AND PROVIDED, OF COURSE THAT HE PERFORMS HIS JOB DUTIES SATISFACTORILY, THEN WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS HOW DISPARAGING ARE WE TALKING.  A LITTLE, OR LIKE REALLY SLANDEROUS TYPE SHIT?  AN EMPLOYER DOESN’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO TERMINATE SOMEONE OVER LITTLE PETTY SHIT, ONCE THEY’RE HIRED, BUT LITTLE STUFF LIKE THAT CAN CERTAINLY PREVENT SOMEONE FROM GETTING HIRED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT’S JUST HARD TO DRAW A LINE WITH FREE SPEECH, I MEAN THERE ARE A LOT OF ASSHOLES WHO WOULD ABUSE SUCH A “RIGHT” IF IT BECAME “INDUSTRY STANDARD.” PEOPLE COULD GET FIRED OVER SOME OVERHEARD CONVERSATION IN THE BATHROOM - I HEARD SO AND SO SAYING THAT SO AND SO IS A DICK - YOU KNOWN, STUFF LIKE THAT.

  3. Bob: yikes.  of course, if somebody explained it to me like that I’d follow their instructions.

At the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, we have a system whereby our production is tracked.  So, if you’re doing your job, that is keepin’ your numbers up to par, then they don’t pay attention to it.  I have heard of people getting into trouble for porn sites, though, which I don’t look at.

I am at work right now, hopefully some geek over in the IT management office or whatever you call it isn’t looking at my screen!

  4. Everyone resents being micromanaged and having some Geek looking over your shoulder.  I say again, be very circumspect about what you say on email at work.  At my former place of employment, a worker email-invited her co-worker friends to a concert. Innocent enough.  She accidentally sent it to all 20,000 employees nationwide.  Many of them emailed her back asking what-the-hell? Those emails also went to all 20,000.  It became such a cluster-fuck that the system administrator intervened.  Before I blocked all emails with the key words to that particular message, my inbox was already crammed.

  5. Yowch. Although I have to use the Internet at work (I am a collector), I certainly don’t talk about work on my blog in such a way as to bad-mouth the place I work for. That’s just common sense.
