Skipper I am pleased that you posted this story. Many people were under the impression that Lend Lease was a charity. As I was at pains to point out every ship that the bosch sank carried cargo that was bought and paid for. Undoubtedly the Germans would not have been defeated by Britain alone but it’s gratifying to see that we paid our way. I wonder how much the Ruskies paid back? By the way those 50 clapped out WW1 destroyers you gave us in exchange for 99 year leases on our bases in the Caribbean. I would like to know what will happen when the lease runs out. Will we get them back do you think? Would we want them now our navy is just an anti submarine screen for the North Sea.
The sad reality was that at the end of WW11 Britain was bankrupt and mistakenly tried to maintain a similar level of military spending as before the war using cash from the Marshall Plan. Meanwhile our former enemies in Japan and Germany were spending bugger all on defence. Not that things have changed much since then. We may not spend as much of our GDP on defence as the US (especially when the socialists are in power) but we do spend more than our Euroweenie “allies” how long this will last though is up for debate as the tentacles of the EU spread ever wider.
