  1. Those who are in the People’s Republic of Californistan:  Buy all you can now.

  2. Greetings from the Left Coast.

That ammo restriction was only the latest chapter in an ongoing saga.  BTW - How many out there fire off less that 100 rounds when you practice at the range?  Personally, when I’m shooting .22, I usually go through 200 or so.  When I’m shooting .45 or .38 I usually burn off around a hundred +/-.

Some highlights of California’s laws, proposed and active include:

Our “assault weapons” law.  Considered the model for all “assault weapons” laws, look out for this one coming to a legislature near you.

Don’t forget our 10 day waiting period.  Rifles, shotguns, pistols, any caliber; you wait 10 days before you can pick it up.

A ban on any pistol with the magazine in front of the trigger.  No grandfather clause.  This also banned many Olympic target pistols.  One legislator when asked about the Olympic shooters in our state, responded “They don’t have to live here.” That law was just barely modified to allow target pistols.

The safety test that Drew mentioned.  Applies to any pistol of any age.  Sort of makes trouble for collectors.  Who is going to submit their 1946 High Standard Military HD for destructive testing and who is going to pay for the paper work?  Fortunately there is a loophole in this one.  Sales between private parties are permissible as long as the transaction goes through a licensed gun dealer.  The only real restriction is that gun dealers can’t trade in collectibles.

Gee, I forgot to mention the one gun a month restriction.

Anyone want to guess how many people out here think you can go to a gun show and buy anything you want with no paperwork, no background check and no registration?  The local cops and BATFE have special plain clothes squads they send around just to check things out.  One gun show vendor was busted for selling machine guns, off site (a hotel) and at a different time.  The gun show was over.  That almost got gun shows banned state wide.

Here’s a fun one.  The city of Los Angeles requires that ammunition sales be registered.  I.D., log book the whole 9 yards.

Here’s one you’ll all like.  It’s called the Basic Firearms Safety Certificate.  There are two ways to get this one.  Either pass a dumb simple test or watch a short video.  The net effect is that every gun purchaser in the state of California is registered.  This one has been upgraded since.

Those are the highlights.  I’m sure I left out some.  The scary part is that many people and legislators here think these laws are “reasonable”.  They will also tell you that our firearms laws are too lax, that it’s just to easy for a criminal to walk into a store and immediately purchase and leave with whatever he wants, including full auto weapons.  During the Rodney King riot, many non gun owners rushed out to buy guns and were shocked to discover that there is a 10 day waiting period.  Reality, what a concept.

Why do people here think our laws are lax?  You can start with the Los Angeles Times and take it from there.  Geez, why does the New York Times get all the credit.  We’ve got our own.  CBS, NBC and ABC contribute too.  When the assault weapons law was being debated, the “documentary” footage was of a full auto AK.  When the news is about a stabbing, the graphic behind the newscaster is a gun.  When the news is about an armed citizen protecting himself or others, it might show up on page 12 under a brassier ad, if it shows up at all.  It goes on.

So guys, I’m living in your future.  Watch out.

  3. Jeff:  When I was shooting regularly, it was not uncommon for me to go through 300 rounds (6 boxes) of .44 magnum in a single session.  50 rounds a month would mean I would do a session like that twice a year, and that would be it for my shooting.

Where I currently live (Canada) the laws and regs on guns are even worse than in California.  The Liberals were in power far too long, and they got their way.  The legal situation regarding guns here would make you think law abiding gun owners go on murderous rampages every second day.  Of course, that’s not the case, but that’s exactly how the government treats its citizens where firearms are concerned.  For that matter, it’s how it treats its citizens generally.

  4. Can we form our own country yet?

I’m so sick of this BS. And we have 3 years, 8 months, and 11 days more of Odipshit to go.

I swear, the way things are going, I’ll either be in a re-education camp or in jail by then.

  5. Drew, you might be in a camp . . . but I’ll be next cell over.

  6. We might all be in a camp.  No one here has ever hesitated to be openly critical of our government.  No one here has ever held back from saying that a government policy should be stopped immediately, started immediately or changed radically.  Sometimes there has been some pretty intemperate language used.  That’s us.  Under a regime that has already branded our ideas as dangerously radical, that puts us all in a pretty “interesting” position.  Here’s hoping that we’re wrong in our concerns.
