Yes, so? Good for him. The Maronites have always allowed their priests to marry, so vice-versa, I can’t see any reason any married deacon couldn’t be promoted up to a priest.
It’s only their monastic monks who can’t marry.
Catholicism comes in nearly two dozen flavors around the world, and that’s not counting the local variations in Central and South America which all fall under the auspices of the Roman branch of the church.
Furthermore, converted ministers from other faiths who become RC priests are not require to divorce; celibacy is a discipline not a doctrine.
And it wasn’t until sometime in the late Middle Ages that the Roman church “banned” their priesthood from marriage. 1500s? Probably around the same time as the Reformation, I’d bet. And the “ban” is more a push than a formal edict.
In this guy’s case - and my goodness, of course it’s his daughter, she looks just like him - he is merely the first previously married man to be ordained. That does not mean he is the first priest to get married.
Lastly, the spiritual weakness to be unable to resist celibacy is neither hetero- nor homo- sexual in nature. For as many priests who have been “on the down low” I’m sure there have been just as many in a secret heterosexual liaison with a woman, whether she lives inside or outside the walls of the church.
Does this mean my contract with the local arch diocese for Lube is gonna be cancelled soon?
