Quick, run out and buy some bullets. You know you need more!

I am not real sure how much ammo I have. I have a lot. I probably don’t need any more right now. All of my ammo is in a trunk and a couple of cardboard boxes. It has become hopelessly mixed together through the years.
If I am going to hunt ducks, I know that I have at least a couple of boxes of #4 steel shot in there somewhere, but I can’t lay my hands on it. I will go out and buy more. God only knows if some of the older stuff would even fire at this point.
I have the same problem with screws, nails and other small hardware. Maybe we should have a national “Organize Your ammo day”.
Don’t worry about that YD. Modern ammunition can sit around 50 years and still work just fine, assuming it hasn’t been left in the damp. If you find corrosion on the brass cases, where they look like old batteries in a radio you’d lost for years, then toss those. Regular tarnish is not a problem. Military ammo can last even longer because the primers and bullets are sealed. If your shotgun ammo is so old that the rounds are built with wax paper hulls, then I’d be cautious, but anything with a plastic hull should be good almost forever.
The idea behind National Ammo Day is to remind people to take an active role in their Second Amendment rights. While it’s nice to own firearms, guns without ammo are nothing more than really well made hammers. And if you never use them you can’t be much good with them. So get out and practice! The “well regulated militia” idea works best if you are a passable marksman. It’s a “practice what you preach” concept. I cranked out a few boxes of .357 for the event, but it’s been far too long since I’ve done some serious target work. Maybe when she’s at the mall this weekend I’ll bundle up and head out to the gun range.
Well I did my part, purchasing 1K of 40 S&W so the XD40 and the SIG 229 have something to eat . I proved Drew’s post (see above) by trying to fire 1940 Nazi production
8mm ammo through my K98 Mauser of the same vintage, just about all are duds. However,
the 1950 something Romanian milsurp works just fine . It came out of one of
those military “sardine cans” so I reckon the storage helped preserve the ammo.
I did OK with dove this season. There was a lot of number 7 shot floating around at the top of the trunk.
