  1. I lived in Long Beach, Miss., from October ‘71 to February ‘72 when my former husband went into business with his brother-in-law.............the business went down the tubes & we relocated back to R.I. as my then husband couldn’t find a job in the Miss. area.............I must tell you I hated living there - we had cockroaches all over the place & snakes!!!!!!!! When it rained our yard was always flooded - we lived 3 blocks from the beach & I hated experiencing Christmas at 70 degrees.........We drove back to R.I. in a VW Beetle hauling our belongings in a U-Haul..........I was 8 months pregnant at the time, holding a dog in my lap all the way...........When I think back on those days, I am so happy to be living the life I live now...........My former sister-in-law & her husband lost their house in Camille...............I called my former sister-in-law tonight as she still has family living in Long Beach - she has not been able to contact them as yet - she told me she will call me when she is able to contact them to be sure they are ok.........I lived through hurricanes while growing up in New England but we never experienced the devastation that the southern states has during Katrina or other past hurricanes................

  2. Got home tonight from vacation, visiting the family in KY/IN. Just missed the remnants of this monstrosity as it hit our hometown of Louisville today. We’ve got one day of rest then the kids start school on Thurs and Fri is our youngest son Robbie’s 6th birthday.

Mega prayers to all involved in the aftermath of Katrina.

  3. Sorry to read this. Looks like a nice place.

Discussing this with folks today, I wonder if there is reason to take drastic action about this i.e. abandon the below sealevel city and relocate (Nueva New Orleans) or maybe get some Dutch engineers in to wall off the city. At any rate, some limits must be put on taxpayer re-building of so many areas that constantly get blasted by floods, hurricanes, tornados, etc etc. And I speak as someone in an earthquake zone. We cannot indemnify everyone against all the “shit happens” aspects of life.

  4. A friend asked me to find out if that complex was the Arbor Station Apartments.  She thinks it is.  Thanks.

  5. Skipper:
It is good to remember what New Orleans was like if you have visited there, which I’m sure you did. I had that privilege four years ago, as a delegate to my Fraternity’s 2001 national convention. So I put up some of the best photos from that experience. More to come...the ones I posted are from the analog camera...I haven’t gotten to the digital pics yet!

  6. So what’s your situation now Skipper?

  7. EMDFL: that is indeed Arbor Station Apartments. I lived there from October 2001 to October 2003. Fortunately for me, I am in St. Louis now and have been here for some time.

CMM: I am fine. I have family in Bay Minette, Atmore, Monroeville and Mobile, AL who haven’t checked in yet.

  8. Severa - was sad to read that the Brunswick Naval Air Station is one on the list to be closed - do you have any idea where you & your husband will be tranferred to once the BNAS is closed??????

I haven’t heard back from my former sister-in-law about her family in Long Beach.........Their homestead was a few blocks from the beach just before the train tracks so, right now, I am assuming their house is gone.............When my former husband & I lived on Long Beach we were 3 blocks from the beach so I assume that house is gone also......... What a devastation this is - it seems to be worse than Camille............

  9. Dottie - The game plan, as far as we’ve heard, is that all P-3 squadrons will be relocated to Jacksonville.

WHEN that would happen if the base list is passed is a WHOLE other story. Everything’s kinda in a holding pattern here…

Much as I like the schools here in Maine (they’ve been WONDERFUL with our sons) I’m ready to get out of this damned BLUE state cheese

  10. Damn.  Thanks.  I’ll pass that along.  They transferred a couple of years ago, but said that while they were there it was a popular complex for the military and their families.
