  1. The problem here is a historic failure by British police coupled to a typical knee jerk over reaction by British politicians.

In the 70’s police in the West Midlands framed several people who they alleged were involved in Republican terrorism. The government over reacted and rather than punish those responsible they introduced PACE. The police and criminal evidence act 1984.

Subsequently there were other abuses, such as the miscarriage of justice of Stefan Kiszko and the men accused of the murder of Carl Bridgewater. This led to more laws such as RIPA (the regulation of investigatory powers act).

What this means is the police in Britain are increasingly hamstrung and the scales of justice have swung in favour of the criminals. Couple this with a largely left wing judiciary, and garbage like disclosure. Where the Crown Prosecution Service has to reveal to the defence anything and everything they plan to introduce at a trial. It is increasingly difficult to get effective convictions.

  2. Well, here it is.  W took the decision.  What would the tawdry demagogue have done?  If anything?

  5. Far better that they grabbed them over there.

Too many liberal lawyers would have been waiting to grab headlines by getting them off over here…

(In the ‘70s the Russians figured out how to stop their airline hijacking/terrorist problems; they lined them up outside the plane and executed them instantly.  This won’t stop until we do the same.)

  6. TimO I’m not so sure. In America they would have got a proper prison sentence. In the UK they will probably get ten years and will be out in five. Then there are the ones that the jury couldn’t reach a decision on. I prefer your Russian solution though!

  7. I wouldn’t be too sure about proper prison sentences in America, Lyndon.  Look at all the trouble we had in trying to convict the hangers-on in the 911 outrage.  All the usual suspects were there on cue, caterwauling about rights, rights, rights, rights, rights....

    Among other things.

    (sigh)

As for the Russians, they have had a tradition of such cures at least since the days of Stalin and company.

Granted, those cures were indiscriminately used in millions of cases where no sickness existed, during Yezhov’s era, especially.

But where they are warranted, they do work.

    hmmm
