Drew this is a good post. I was going to say I can’t believe America imports drywall but sadly I can. As you say it is most likely non existent Chinese quality control. There is a factory in Iowa where I used to live that churns out gypsum. So it’s not like the US needs to import the stuff. The price differential between US made drywall and Chinese rubbish can’t be that great.
Trouble is now it is becoming increasingly difficult to find non Chinese manufactured commodities. I actively avoid Chinese stuff as most of it is junk and to be honest I don’t trust China. Years ago there was talk that they wanted a fleet to rival the US and they have continued to pump money into their military. The current econmic situation will postpone their plans somewhat but once they achieve parity does anyone expect them to not throw their weight around?
Drew, Thanks. Who’d have thought a lesson on that subject would be interesting? But it really was.
One of those things I guess ppl take for granted and don’t really think about.
I’ll bet you can come up with lots of things we import that we actually do not HAVE to.
Hey Lyndon ... Interesting article (and confusing) in todays Times by Daniel Foggo on Magnum handguns here. And legal. ?? That’s how I read it anyway. Apparently there’s some sort of loophole?
Am going to try and locate it and post it. Really surprised me.
A lot of those Florida complaints about sulferous drywall came from here on the Treasure Coast of Florida (West Palm Beach to Canaveral)...of course you have to put a lot of salt in any complaints you have from here, we still have large groups of people who insist that we can’t floridate our water due to the mind-control (seriously, I’m not kidding!)
Avoiding anything manufactured (not assembled) outside your chosen country of residence is the way out of the recession, Ive been in Canada since last November and I have bought very little that was not made here. I love Apple computer but they will not have my custom unless it is made elsewhere, I want an iPhone but no dice, all made in China, all Blackberrys are made here. It is about time the connection with"made in China” and recession are realised.
"What the heck is drywall anyway, and why are we importing it?”
You might know it by the term, “sheetrock”.
