What are the odds of this happening?

  1. The quote they gave from the pilot was that he “didn’t see the ride in front of him”.
If so, he was already buzzing dangerously low over the carnival full of people in a wooded area.  Here in the US that would be a crime where you’re suppossed to maintain a minimum altitude.  He’d have his license pulled at the very least, if not criminally prosecuted.
    He was joy-riding.

  2. One of the other news articles said he had just taken off from a field nearby. Still, he should have been looking where he was going, and it was probably pretty stupid of the carnival people to put up the ferris wheel right across the end of the runway. I mean, come on, the little wheel is only maybe 30 feet high, which means it would be within 100 yards of the strip. They could not NOT have known that there was an airport right the heck there. Same goes for the pilot, but in reverse: he could not NOT have known about the carnival, it was right the heck in front of him.

I agree TimO, it sounds like stupid all around.

I also pretty amazed that the little airplane didn’t topple or even tear the wheel up that much. It doesn’t look that robust. So how fast was the plane going, maybe 10mph? Strange.
