  1. By a tilt drum, do you mean one of these enormous modern front loader machines? That kind of High Efficiency Washer is very popular here now, but I understand they have cleanliness issues, with detergent residue build up, and a tendency to grow mold and mildew. I’m guessing they don’t fully drain or something like that. And they are darned expensive, many of them costing $800 or more.

  2. Well, it is a front loader yes.  At one time I used to see lots of them (Bendix? and Maytag)back home. Never read or heard the negatives you mention in relation to tilt drums tho.  Coincidentally however, I did read about a machine here that did have the problem of mildew and odor. Will avoid that one.

I was told some time ago that a tilt drum put less stress on the motor, and or the pullies?
Does that look right? It was one of the two or maybe both. Anyway, a tilt would be better as the bending is getting to be a bit much and Jenn can not bend to the extreme needed to load our old one.  Well, she could if she were pushed to it but the pain caused would not be worth the effort.  So take of it but find it bothersome. Maybe difficult closer to the truth.
A laundry service a few miles away used to pick up laundry in morning and bring back mostly dry in the afternoon, but they stopped doing that a while back.

Yeah ... I know they are costly here, that is, if I can even find one. The area we have for a washer and dryer is very small, and no other place on property to hook to.

I suppose one thing that might be an option, would be to build a platform a few inches higher to lift the washer off the floor. Not sure a few inches would make that big a difference however.
Oh well,,, onward.  Am doing some research at the moment trying to find what we want. Trip to store will be necessary.  I know some folks buy on line but a washing machine isn’t something I’ll buy without seeing it in the store.

  3. one of these enormous?

I forgot.  The one’s I saw over here a few years ago didn’t fit that description.
They were normal size but as you’ve pointed out, expensive. I really doubt we could afford it if we found one.

  4. I keep being told (as we are shelling out another couple of hundred bucks) that our Whirlpool w/d set is still bomb. Makes me wonder how crappy the new stuff really is.

But this set (dryer 2000, washer 2002) are nothing compared to the set I bought in CA in 1977 (get those dates - 23 years +) and neither really quit - we were just on the second heat element and second spin problem. And they had massive capacity - I was told I was expecting twins and w/3 yr old - was not going to do the schlepping to the laundromat with all the kids and laundry for 5. No twins - but the w/d set sure came in handy throughout the years.

This set - no so much - other than the convenience of having it in my own home.

We like the new fridge and stove (Frigidaire) but worried about our next purchase this year - a new dishwasher. A 2000 model of Sears Kenmore Elite that is the biggest piece of junk ever put together. Already (before it died last year) - hundreds in replacement parts - the majority of which have already broken again.

No honor, no quality, no service - brought to America by the unions - who like politicians - get paid, get their healthcare and get their retirements - no matter if they produce a damn thing at all.

  5. You speak the truth Wardmom.

At the time we bought the washing machine we have, which now sits dead, we had no idea we’d bought at just about the bottom of the line. Anyway, I don’t hold much hope for any ovem.
But am trying to use as a guide, a consumer reports type of agency here called Which?. Yeah, which with a question mark after it. Our limit is 500 pounds which in USA dollare works out to around $760.  Altho we ‘re also looking at machines that cost less, but one of the higher rated machines cost that much, and the reviews say it’s a better buy than ones costing much more.  ??  It’s a crap shoot.

  6. We’ve got the Maytag Performa top load washer that came with this condo, and I think it’s about a decade old. The thing looks like new, does the job, and has never had a problem. It has plenty of settings which we never use, and the enameled tub is big enough to wash queen size quilts. I can’t find a size spec, but my guess is 3.5 cubic feet? Big but not gigantic. I gather it was a lower cost machine when new. It’s still much nicer than the machine we had at the previous condo.

Have you tried fixing yours yourself? There is a lot of stuff online, and many times the appliance really only needs a good cleaning. Lint trap gets clogged, pump out gets clogged. Installing a new motor isn’t really that hard; the gearbox on a washer lasts forever, and the valve solenoid is mighty robust too. If yours is “dead” without any burned electronics smell, odds are the internal fuse has blown.

    one place to start ...
