Trivial Pursuit

  1. 1. 18 states in 1814 - Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792) made the Flag - 15 Stars and 15 Stripes (8 red/7 white) at the time was flying over Ft. McHenry (TN/1796; OH/1803; LA/1812 were the other 3 states).
    2. Congreve came up the rockets shot from metal tubes after looking at Indian tube rockets from British War with India, with a iron case of black powder on a wooden poll - sounds like fireworks to me - as it also said they were never fired without other artillery.
    3. Admiral Alex Cochrane - (the only interesting British voyages (not War related)during the time span 1819 - 1824 are to the Northwest Passage (Arctic) and Antarctic although I can’t find Cochrane in connection to either).
    4. Major George Armistead commanded Ft. McHenry; his nephew Brig. Gen.Lewis Armistead was killed at Gettysburg during Pickett’s Charge.

  2. Wardmama, you are just too darned good!

    Except for #3.

Admiral Cochrane was Commander In Chief of North American Station and was more or less in charge but the Admiral who planned and carried out the burning of Washington and subsequent attack on Ft. McHenry was Admiral George Cockburn.

One year after the Ft. McHenry episode and with the War Of 1812 over, Admiral Cockburn made a voyage on HMS Northumberland to St. Helena in the South Atlantic to deliver a certain French Emperor into exile. He also served as governor of St. Helena.

You still win the prize for this week though! I wonder where Tannenberg is hiding today. Shame on him!

    LOL

  3. History isn’t my area but I am surrounded by history buffs. There was little on Cochrane - I did my best.

It’s Sunday and most people have lives - my team isn’t playing and now that family has left, I can get back to visiting my computer [I did not know how much I’ve come to despise daytime network tv until forced to watch it for 2 days]. I must find some interesting day trip for the next time - as I can not go through that again.

  4. Daytime network TV? My God! Not that! The Geneva Convention forbids it! Call Amnesty International now!

Get some rest and surf the net. There’s plenty out there to play with. As usual, it’s Sunday and I’m just fiddle-farting around here. Try the video above this post. It might make you smile.

    LOL

  5. Sorry I wasn’t first in line, Skip.  This was one morning I decided to sleep in.  Congratulations to Wardmama!

Teddy Roosevelt wrote a comprehensive account of the naval War of 1812, and it’s now back into print.  I recommend it highly.  The best single-volume account of the war I ever saw isn’t so easy to find, but it’s worth a hunt.  Donald R. Hickey published it with the U-Illinois Press, and it’s called simply The War of 1812.  The Library of Congress number is 88-38928, and the ISBN number is 0-252-01613-0.

Also see C.S. Forester’s Age of Fighting Sail. That is probably the best non-scholarly version of the naval war of 1812.

    wink

  6. I have a confession to make. The reason for this post is that I just finished reading “1812: The War That Forged A Nation” by William R. Borneman (2004, Harper-Collins, ISBN: 0-06-053112-6).

Excellent retelling of the story of the war. He relies a lot on Roosevelt’s book as well as Mahan and Jomini for research, with a great deal more detail on the politics of the war as well as the actual fighting that took place. I found it highly readable and enjoyable.

    cool smile

  7. I’ll add this to my search list, Skip.  Appreciate the tip.

Maybe a Yank girlfriend would be safer (she likely wouldn’t even know who Prien was).

  11. Guys don’t get upset. The dog was sick - so I was up early. Had family all week, so I haven’t been able to do much computering (especially visiting the sites I normally check every day) and I don’t have a life - so the computer is my outlet right now. And I won, ‘cuz I’m surrounded by history buffs - my older daughter called in a tizzy because her history prof is great but can’t keep his dates straight and she was worried that she had messed up the final by being correct on the dates! I only won because I’m boring and surrounded by ringers - if my dad were alive - I’d probably gotten the Cochrane one too - since Navy and ships was his thing.

And that’s the way to come off looking smart - surround yourself with knowledgeable people. And now you also see why no one in my family plays trivia games with me - I’m half way to the answer before the question is finished being asked. It is the only talent I have.

  12. I lived in Baltimore for years. Used to be that on the morning of July 4th there would be a re-enactment of the bombardment, complete with cannon boats. Wasn’t too popular as the shelling started about 6:30 am.

Used to live near Patterson Park in East Baltimore (Ball-mer) near Highlandtown (hollandtown). Clipperships were built in Lake Patterson (much bigger in those days) hidden from British ships. They’d drop the clipper’s masts backward, sail them down a canal under the streets and out into the harbor to go marauding under Letters of Marque and Reprisal as authorised by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. In 1812, a line of cannon ran up over the hill of Patterson Park aimed at the harbor. This prevented British marines from landing to the north and flanking Ft. McHenry. British infantry did this in DC by landing at Brandywine, southeast of DC, after sailing right by the very powerful Ft. Washington which fired a shot or two and was abandoned. They could have sunk a whole fleet, but must have been commanded by French or Dhimmycratic officers, maybe… red face

Resistance to a landing at North Point stopped a British flanking attempt on Baltimore. (http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/npbattle.html) A monument to the battle can be seen in front of Baltimore’s City Hall. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Baltimore)

Used to work at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church (http://www.gbgm-umc.org/mtvernonplumc/) which is built on the site of Francis Scott Key’s birthplace. Very historic city, Baltimore.

  13. Doh, it was Key’s deathplace. Belonged to his daughter and her husband.
