  1. One of my favorite movies..
How Thw West Was Won.  Mr Stewart plays Linus Rawlings, a free-foot trapper.
Eve was Diane Baker.  Her sister was Debbie Reynolds.
    Great movie.

  2. Guess I can’t pull anything over the BMEWSd.

    Yes indeedy. Corsair is correct.

For extra bragging rights, what happened to Linus Rawlings?

For extra extra credit, why don’t they make great movies like this anymore?

  3. Linus goes into makeshift riverfront bar located in a cave and was lured into “looking into the pit” or something like that.  He was knocked in the head and thrown into the pit and left for dead.  The barkeep (Walter Brennan) and his followers then stole Linus’s furs.
Why no more movies like this.  Easy. Untalented writers (public school products), leftist producers, and a populace that demands instant gratification.  No thought, just feelings.

  4. Walter Brennan was always good value for money as well. The doctor in Bad Day at Black Rock and “Stumpy” in Rio Bravo. Great stuff. You are right Corsair, they don’t make much these days that convinces me to part with my cash.

  5. If you’re a dog lover, check out “Goodby My Lady”.  Walter Brennan is terrific is this little jewel of a movie.

  6. Now Now. The reason they dont make movies like that anymore is they cant figure out how to integrate 2 gay guys and pudding into the plot.

  7. I know it runs against the accepted wisdom, but I really think that the PROPORTION of good movies is about the same as ever. What I call “Schofield’s first Law of popular entertainment” holds that “We remember the popular culture of eras past so fondly because, mercifully, we don’t remember it all that well.”

In short, we remember How The West Was Won, while we have forgotten literally dozens of REALLY AWFUL films also released in 1963.

Hollywood today isn’t going to be making any more John Ford films. Ford is dead. Hollywood in 1963 wasn’t making any Ron Howard films. Ron was still little Ronnie Howard, best known as the kid in Music Man.

What do I like that was made in the last decade?

The Lord of the Rings, Cindarella Man, Hidalgo, anything by Pixar (some more than others), Ike, Dogtown and Z Boys (the documentary; the dramatic film Lords of Dogtown was dreck), The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Lots of good stuff out there. Lots of trash too. About 90% trash, just as Sturgeon’s Law ("90% of science fiction, and everything else, is trash") dictates.
