The Senate Fiddles …

  1. I think we should stop characterizing illegals personal qualities and focus on the social disruption caused by large, uncontrolled numbers.  And, of course, the disrespect for the law. I’m quite serious—the tone of some comments is disturbing.

Posted by Oink    United States   04/07/2006  at  08:05 AM

  2. What comments are disturbing you, Oink? There are a lot of very angry people on both sides of this issue.

    question

Posted by The Skipper    United States   04/07/2006  at  08:16 AM

  3. And what does that Irish immigration cartoon have to do with current problems? Are you trying to piss me off again?

Posted by The Skipper    United States   04/07/2006  at  08:17 AM

  4. This cartoon is, what? 100 years old? It shows anti-immigrant sentiment against the ancestors of people who are fine citizens today.  I do not see any Irish ghettos or Irish gangs roaming our streets.  My only beef is with the drunken Irish on Saint Paddy’s day.

Immigrants are not going to be the cream of their country’s society.  Very few rich landowners emigrate.  They are going to be poor and uneducated—for a generation.  I do not want to engage in personal attacks, but we have been perilously close, in some cases, to racism.  Our problem, again, is with respect for law and huge uncontrolled numbers of people.  That they smell bad is not the point.

Posted by Oink    United States   04/07/2006  at  08:26 AM

  5. Oink, the difference between my ancestors whom you have chosen to toss into this diatribe and the Mexicans is that the Irish came over legally and went through the process to become citizens. What part of that don’t you understand? As for being malodorous, what stinks is the flaunting of the law of the land.

I keep a close eye on the comments here and if anyone crosses the “racism” line I will handle it. And your stereotyping of “drunken Irish on Saint Paddy’s day” lends no credence to your argument.

    mad

Posted by The Skipper    United States   04/07/2006  at  08:44 AM

  6. The ‘drunken Irish’ was a joke; the only thing I avoid is driving on St. P’s evening. Pissing of The Skipper (as opposed to irritating him) is like “being brave”: something I only do when absolutely unavoidable.

Every man needs to have someone who can say to him, “On this particular issue, you’re wrong”. Think of the problems Stalin had on the German invasion and Saddam on the inspections for WMDs—vs. Harry Truman who wanted to hear differing opinions.

I am in favor of deporting illegals. Period.

BUT FOR EXAMPLE:  When it comes to discussing homosexually, Rev. Dipshit and his “God Hates Fags” campaign is not helpful. Anything less than a glowing endorsement of gays gets you accused of being one of his flock.  Likewise Sen. McCarthy and Communism.

If I am against unrestricted borders then I am anti-Mexican? No. But certain talk can poison the whole issue. END.

Posted by Oink    United States   04/07/2006  at  09:09 AM

  7. Oink you make a valid point. I am guilty on occassion of tarring all muslims with the terrorist brush. Obviously this is untrue, though there are worrying numbers of “normal” muslims that seem to find acts I consider terrorism to be perfectly acceptable.

However you’re right, we can undermine the whole argument by making unhelpful comments. We don’t suffer from the influx of hispanics and South Americans, though we do have surprisingly high numbers of Brazilians working illegally in the UK. Our principal immigration problems come from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia and with various African countries making up the rest. Personally I would feel happier having hispanics to deal with as they are more likely to be Catholic, which for me is infinitely preferable to the muslim horde! On top of that it really shouldn’t be too difficult to deport them. Where I take issue with the proposal is allowing people to stay if they have been in the US for 5 years. How do they prove when they came in as they presumably were undocumented?

I think your politicians could sort this out quite quickly by putting financial pressure on Mexico. Which begs the question why aren’t they doing anything? They must appreciate this issue is infuriating voters. Also by not doing anything it does play into the hands of racists.

  8. "hope for American citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.” We don’t owe anything, least of all citizenship, to illegal immigrants, regardless of origin, beyond not abusing them.

Deportation sounds attractive in light of the law, and I agree with Oink that is what should happen, but the logistics of rounding up and transporting 12 million people are mind boggling and mass movements of that size of mostly Latinos would immediately draw parallel comparisons to the Nazis’ racist rounding up and shipping of Jews to concentration camps. The howls of protest around the world and at home will be deafening.

We can kill moths around the porch light by the hundreds every night all summer long, but as long as the lamp is there, they will come.  Turn off the light and they stop coming in great numbers. Likewise, make it much less attractive to come here and the flow will abate.
    To that end:
    1. We must fine employers who use illegals, and impose incrementally heavier fines for repeat offenders;
    2. We must withhold all benefits, services and school admissions to illegals except for life-threatening medical problems.
    3. We must eliminate the “anchor baby” automatic citizenship possibility for those born to illegals. At the time of the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, the authors repeatedly used the words “under the jurisdiction of the United States.” If the mother is here illegally, she has ignored the law and is not under jurisdiction, but like an animal running in the forest.  The child should have no citizenship right.  Do UN Ambassadors whose wives birth in New York have US citizens for children?  I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
    4. We must allow not just ICE, but all law enforcement agencies to act on immigration violations and seal our borders.

Turn down the light and they will leave.

Now that said, every Central American I have dealt with over the years was a hard-working, family loving, decent man.  I am convinced that if we allow them back as legal immigrants and guest workers with the requirement that they learn English, they have the potential to assimilate and become part of the American fabric.  Being here illegally only encourages living below the radar in low-rent ghettoes, which can only foster resentment against the gringos and feed organizations like MS13 and La Raza.

Any path we choose will be difficult, but we just can’t afford to ignore the issue or we will cease to be a sovereign nation.

  9. Thanks.
The perfect solution to the “Drug Problem” is to eliminate demand.
The perfect solution to illegal immigrants is Freedom & Prosperity in the countries they come from.

Don’t hold your breath. And don’t neglect the Possible whilst waiting for the Perfect.

  10. OCM, if you post that duct tape image one more time I’m going to hunt you down and ram a roll of duct tape up your butt!

    banghead

  11. Are you saying I should censor Z-Woof? BE ASHAMED, OCM!

    LOL

Posted by The Skipper    United States   04/07/2006  at  11:08 AM

  12. Oink- i concur wholeheartedly.
I much prefer focusing on the main issue, versus the personal attacks and rampant generalizations that totally derail any meaningful discussion.
It is a given that the more emotive an issue- the more generalization and personal attacks occur. Sad, but true.
ah k...i am done for the day, i have to rest my fricken injured ankle shut eye

  13. ANOTHER good reason for enforcing the law—the resentment.  Example: at a local hospital a sign says, SMOKING PERMITTED BEYOND THIS POINT—and about a dozen people smoking in violation.  Either enforce it or move the sign.  That stuff causes resentment of smokers—justifiably.

OCM: Why not go back to the head-up-ass picture?  NOT.  Perhaps, instead of duct tape, Detcord?

  14. Now that’s what I call a worthwhile post. Informative, educational, interesting, yet entertaining at the same time.
PS: I like the duct tape! ... and that’s all I’m going to say about that!

Posted by Carguy    United States   04/07/2006  at  01:40 PM

  15. Thanks & just kidding about that stuff, Carguy.  An astounding explosive—looks like rope, or extension cord, detonates at 7000-8000 meters/second. (thanx Wikipedia) In infantry training an instructor detonated a 100 foot length—instantaneous thunder.  I always did like stuff that goes BOOM! That stuff made me nervous.

Posted by Oink    United States   04/07/2006  at  02:22 PM

  16. (sigh ... here we go again, Skipper)

Yeah, I know. Herding cats as usual.

(be gentle until he calms down)

    OK, I will.

OCM, YOU OLD CATSHIT COCKSUCKER! SIT YER ASS DOWN AND STFU!

(oh, shit - not like that Skip)

    What?

    (try it one more time)

OK. Ahem. OCM, I object to your posting that picture of duct tape in four different posts within a ten minute period. That looks to me like you’re stalking Z-Woof through the posts to pick a fight. If you two have a beef, take it off-line.

OCM, if you object to hearing about HSA’s then don’t read his comments. Please.

Z-WOOF, please tone it down some, OK? OCM’s blood pressure is getting too high. And talk about something other than HSA’s now and then. Please.

Now, the two of you act like grown men, shake hands and agree to disagree.

(Skip, that was great! Do you think they’ll listen?)

    Not a chance.

    LOL

  17. Did anybody else see the FoxNews story this morning on ranches around the border and how they are just totally polluted with ‘stuff’from groups camping there overnight and leaving everything they didn’t want/need anymore .  One woman must have had 100 bicycles (I am not kidding)people abandoned on her land.  I still don’t quite understand why you would leave a bicycle in the middle of the field.  Most of the stuff was water bottles, backpacks, medicines, trash etc.  It looked like a landfill in areas.  How sad and unfair that these taxpaying landowners have to deal with all of this.  It certainly appeared to me that it would be a full time job to simply maintain your land with it being used as an illegal campgroud all the time.

There also was a lot of torn etc, women’s underwear indicative of violent crimes.  I guess it just reinforces to me that we are not doing ANYONE any favors by turning a blind eye and therefore encouraging this.

  20. That’s pretty good!

I may indeed be a Redneck, ‘cause I think the men who invented duct tape and WD40 deserve the Nobel Prize.

Helluva pig. Only my friend OCM could find this.

  21. re: #18....no, but i do have to keep my leg( because of my ankle) *elevated* a good part of the day currently...i keep repeating *it will get better!* and it will smile

re: #24: I read about that, then ran across a news article with pictures of the areas....good grief! it looked like a hazardous waste site, i would be at wits end if I had to deal with that kind of mess every day, and you are correct- I bet it takes a big chunk of time to deal with the mess left behind

OCM and Oink- thanks as usual for the funny pics....you guys keep me entertained! good_one

  22. Since everyone seems to be at odds with each other here is my OT point for this morning:

Sunday April 9th is the 2nd Anniversary of the capture of SSG Keith ‘Matt’ Maupin, the only American POW in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Contrary to the Geneva Convention, his parents have not had contact with him, nor seen him since a few days after his capture. (Personal, where are all the Human Rights Groups and Red Cross on this one????)

His parents, Keith and Carolyn Maupin ask that everyone put up a Yellow Ribbon on Sunday in rememberance of SSG Maupin and our Troops. Local Groups are asking that everyone pray on Sunday for SSG Maupin and I extend that to include his parents.

Now y’all can go back to fighting over duct tape, HSA, and all your usual stuff.

  23. wardmama! Thanks for this post- nice to see someone else here thinks of this young man and his family....i have referred to him twice in the last year here in posts....When I first became a member here at BMEWS I also wrote an email re: Keith *Matt* Maupin, in the hopes it would generate a topic post and garner him and the fact he is unaccounted for in Iraq some attention...I belong to another blog that posts frequently any news (pretty much NO news) of him, which is good , since it does help keep HIM and his family in the forefront of peoples minds who read it.....Again - THANK YOU ! I pray daily- several heart prayers througout the day for Keith *Matt* Maupin and his family....God Bless him and his family.

    I will not forget him.

  24. I’m sorry but this is too damn simple and no one has the balls to enforce-

    1) A fence with guards, mines in a ‘no mans land’ would be cool.

People who get the message mighty quick and stop trying to cross at least on land.

    2) The power for local and state police to arrest & deport *AT ONCE* after proof illegal status is determined.

    3) Stiff fines and stiff jail time for those who hire these people.

    4) Arrest & deport those who support illegal immigrants. Those who undermine the laws of the US should not be allowed to stay here, period.

What part of *illegal* isn’t clear? Mexico treats immigrants far more harshly then the USA, what is good for them is good for us.
