  6. And, the bad news is—(from Jan 24 WSJ Opinion Journal, Best of the Web)

The surprising thing about Canada’s election yesterday was the extent
to which the country’s ruling Liberal Party was NOT decimated. Beset by
scandal and running a sloppy campaign that never saw it come out on top
in any single 24-hour-news cycle, the Liberals nevertheles won 31% of
the vote, only about six points behind the winning Conservative Party.
Canada remains a far more collectivist country than its giant neighbor
    to the south.
The Liberals and the socialist New Democrats together won
more seats in parliament than the Conservatives.

  7. Oink, that only shows that sozialista fools and their follies are damned hard to separate, like an addict and his needle.

  8. Tann: Even before reading the above, I was doubtful.  Has any country decided that they were tired of government taking care of their needs and voted it (and the benefits) out?  I believe it’ll require a collapse first.  Every program creats a constituency that wants to hang on to their handout.

  9. Guys, the article Oink quoted only shows that Canada’s left wing party is still in charge of their media, nothing more. Same as it is here!

  10. WSJ = Wall Street Journal, & facts is facts.

  11. Oink I think you are right with this. The last time there was a sea change in British politics was when Margaret Thatcher came to power. The Labour party and the unions had bankrupted us. Sadly I see history repeating itself. The Conservative opposition seem to think the way to get re-elected is to mimic Labour. I think they are in for a shock.

The Labour party here has created a huge client state of “lesbian gay outreach counsellors” and similar non jobs. There are millions on “incapacity benefit” who claim they are too sick to work. The hundreds of thousands of public sector workers who have been brought in by Labour will all expect an index lnked pension when they retire. At present our budget deficit is £39 billion ($66 billion) small beer in US terms, but it will require substantial tax rises. The Conservatives would do well to learn from the Canucks and not try to be alternative socialists.

  12. LBJ: Thus far (I sound rather Brit, eh?) the best anyone in our two countries has managed is too slow the rate of government growth.

  13. Oink, I agree.  A collapse is always required.  Every welfare state infects itself with an inoperable cancer.  All of them sacrifice their best on the altars of their worst.  All of them subsidize parasites of every shade, at the expense of productive people, and naturally the parasites multiply while the productive people diminish.  The collapse is only a matter of time.

John Galt is really only an embodiment of the natural laws he quoted in Atlas Shrugged.

    hmmm
