The dirty little secret is that in most cases, recyclables just go into the landfills with the rest of the garbage.
You can only put a small percentage - 10% or so with newsprint/paper - back into new product and the amount of recycled stuff has far outstripped the capability to use it. Only aluminum and a few other products can be 100% recycled.
The massive recycling campaigns are nothing more than a ‘feel good’ political stunt.
Yes I heard that about glass bottles too. What an awesome idea - to shred junk mail and newspaper for kitty litter - I’m seriously considering it. I read somewhere that some truly idiotic place (San Fransisco?!?) insists that recyclers clean their pizza boxes and recycle them - talk about stuck on stupid. And their most stupid idea - plastic bags - trees (paper bags) can be renewed (plant a friggin’ acorn - the damn squirrels in my back yard do it yearly) - now the damn bags are so overwhelming - our recycle won’t TAKE THEM AT ALL.
