The 1938 Great New England Hurricane washed away many homes, yachts and land along the southern coast of Rhode Island where I grew up. Of course this was several years before I was born, but my grandparents told me many stories about the ‘38 hurricane. I have a newspaper from that era somewhere in my house (damned if I can put my finger on it right now!). However, the area that was destroyed, Watch Hill, is now & has been since 1938 a strip of land only a few hundred feet wide and is a nature preserve, home to ospreys, piping plovers and a variety of ducks, geese and swans. Boats can anchor on the bay side & during the summer people can walk the 3-4 mile long area, picnic, fish on the ocean side and just enjoy the view. It is so beautiful & hard to visualize that there were once many summer homes & hotels along this sandy piece of land............Nature can play cruel tricks but the end result of ‘38 is a place of gentle peace and nature..............
....a place of gentle peace and nature…
Yep, until the next storm comes through as nature decides to pay a visit, takes those ospreys, piping plovers, etc. and turns them into “objects” for determining the tensile strength of car windshields, airplane windows, and boat hulls.
hehehehe!
***runs like hell***
