Spring Forward!

  1. Well, I for one am amazed.  The computers and file server updated their times properly and appear to still work.  Of course, I am not running any real fancy software that relies on time to keep appointments, track a million checking accounts, etc.  I still don’t look forward to tomorrow morning.  Luckily, as a traveling tech, all my appointments for tomorrow were booked last week, so it will be up to the boss to handle the really weird stuff tomorrow.  Bwa-ha-ha.

  2. and of course m$ can’t be bothered to issue a patch for Win2k to fix the DST settings… so I’d have to patch the registry to do it

and I REALLY don’t feel like doing that. I’d rather go to the range instead. I just flipped it by hand.

  3. Worse for Win98.  The official stance is “change the clock manually on the 11th, and change it again on April 1”.  Lots of Win98 machines out there still.

  4. My servers are all OK but my new Windows Mobile based cell phone can’t tell time this morning. Maybe if I reboot it? Nope that didn’t work. Why can’t the government just leave time alone. I never liked DST to begin with.

  5. My cell phone cal tell time now after I installed a new version of the OS. My Verison FIOS cable TV just advanced another hour. My cable box now thinks that is 2:11PM. Very strange stuff…

  6. So, on 1 April will all the computers spring forward?

The dolts who got this thru Congress are typical examples of pols who think lightly about deep subjects. We all “know for a fact” that DST saves energy, therefore going to it early will save more! But, of course, the multi millions spent on resetting so many computers just goes over there pointy little heads. Idiots.

  7. I have gotten me cell phone software and bluetooth devices reinstalled so that everything works now. They went to DST and the 55 MPH speed limit back during the OPEC oil embargo in the 70’s sometime. Thank goodness they didn’t make the mile just a little shorter for half of the year, to help with gas mileage.

My cable boxes still think it is 6:22PM CDT right now. I have rebooted each of them several times now. You can’t get through to Verison’s tech support. It would seem that the sys admins would have fixed the problem already if they could have done it from the datacenter side of things. I wonder if they are going to have to physically touch each cable box in order to fix the problem? That would be expensive.

I would remind everyone that the Republicans were in charge of the Legislature and the Presidency when this change was approved. Don’t forget to vote the bastards out during the next election cycle.

I am not looking forward to Monday morning. I hope time remains constant until then.

  8. YD,

Now, I can get the details if you’d like, but here is a rundown on this silly-assed bill.

It was proposed by a Rep and a Dem, attached to an energy bill and some folks wanted to amend the bill to remove the provision on early DST. But the bill, by whatever parliamentary hoohah, had to be voted upon in whole, up or down, and voting it down was not feasible as it would kill a number of very important things. Bush could not fail to sign the bill, and this rider was in there.

Okay, I know that is weak on substance, but that is the gist of the thing. Most folks like the idea and I think for the most part people just did not think it out.

I am here in rainy Seattle, at 5:08 pm and it is bright. If it was clear, I’d still have sunlight flooding into my office, which faces south looking at the Space Needle to the right and Mt. Ranier to the left. (Thhhhwwwwpppp to y’all who look out at nothing this cool). I like it, although I know it caused a lot of trouble.
