Spooky

  1. In 1995 I witnessed a similar ‘spooky’ moment.

The occasion was the death of Grandpa. The ‘spooky’ part happened after the funeral. I hadn’t been to that part of Indiana since my father’s death in ‘74. Dad’s second wife showed me where he was buried. (I was only 14 in ‘74. I couldn’t have found it without her direction.)

We came up on the gravesite, and there it was: the tombstone that said “_ Michael _”. In a really lousy attempt to copy the original engraving was the added ‘Sr’.

Standing next to me was my half-brother, the oldest son of dad’s second marriage; _ Michael _ Jr. He told me that he had ‘Sr; added because seeing his name there without it ‘spooked’ him.

  2. Having my Mom’s things here (she was the one who did the genealogy) has been great - found out the more exact stories of how/when family immigrated to the US - found out most of my Dad’s family settled in Dayton OH but no explanation about how his great-grandfather ended up in Marietta (where his grandfather was born) - it was a nephew who did a bit of the heavy lifting - and came up with the cemetery that John _ , his wife Veronika and the one child that did not survive childhood - Veronica are buried (now I have the pictures of their tombstones). They were all Methodist ministers - it was John’s son Frederick who struck off into medicine - from him down - are all buried here (Cincy) in the family plot - that sadly I am now in charge of.

How quickly things change - it is odd suddenly being the one in charge - I’m the youngest in the family - never thought it would fall to me.

A relative (distant) of my Mom’s from her Grandfathers native Sweden has been sending pictures to fill in that side of the family history - her 20 something cousin looks just like my Mom - it is quite interesting.

On the tombstone - I went to the cemeteries on Memorial Day to lay wreaths (Dad, Uncle & Grandfather are Veterans) in 2009 as my Mom was no longer able to make the trip - the cemetery had already placed her stone - it was very spooky to me - I’d thought I’d missed something!
