You remind me alot of how Rachel Lucas sounds when descibing all things euro in her blog. That is one thing you do have going for you being there, seeing it up close and personal.OH well, back to my urban hovel ways,,,,,Oh look, a squirrel just got lucky and avoided that prius while crossing the road.Ahhh, America!
Thank you Peiper. I really enjoy the history you include in the blog. My husband and I met and married in England and one day we hope to go back for a long visit. In the meantime you make my day.....
Takes me back to the small towns I lived in in Germany - interesting to be able to see such ancient places. There is a show on cable called If Walls Could Talk, about some of the more elderly of our homes and what the new owners discovered as they either repaired or researched their homes.
I just went through a trunk of pictures I’d gotten from my mom - one picture of the house my grandfather built - typical of someone who had finally made it (i.e. financially) taken to show the new pool. But what blew me away was seeing the barn (the barn and it’s farmhouse were the original structures on the property). For one it looked so much closer to the house than I ever remembered - but in 1945ish (when the picture was taken) there were no trees. And second, if you look closely, you can see that it was actually a working farm (hmmm, wonder how 1 doctor with 2 war ‘windows’ and 5 kids on the place actually worked a farm?!?). I also found their ration certificates (for the farm truck) and a sheet of ration stamps. And a picture of his father in his WWI uniform.
My grandfather was the type that was/is the core of America - he worked hard at many different things, he thought outside the box and with picture and film most especially - he was on the cutting edge, and he was a family man until his death (within one month of retiring).
Our history is what makes us realize how far we have come but more exactly where we’ve come from, what made us great and what it took to get us here.
In America - we appear to have forgotten all our history, the Constitution and all of the millions of citizens who stepped up to give their lives to preserve our Freedom and our Rights. It makes me want to cry.
Your pictures are great - beautiful.
Gorgeous post. Well done!
