  1. The pres. and his staff are doing a really bad job of explaining this thing to people.  First, they gotta make it clear that old people (like OCM, who is sounding more and more like a right winger, aside from the half baked lottery idea hashed out above - but maybe there’s even a point there because lots of soc sec recipients spend most of their money on lottery tickets anyway) but I digress.  The thing about it is individual responsibility.  Don’t wanna take any risk, then put your whole nut in the “G” fund which is just like a savings account with a little better interest rate.  Feel lucky, put it the “I” fund.  I am a US Gov. employee and thing the thrift savings plan it awesome.

If somebody is about to retire, and they put everything in the super-risky international stock fund (the “I” fund), and the electronics industry in Malaysia takes a hit, devaluing their stock in the “I” fund, then it’s ON THEM.  It’s just gonna have to be too bad, I guess.

W needs to do a Ross Perot style “c’mon people” type talk with pie charts and all on national TV to sell this program. Take a good hour to ‘splain it to people.

  2. OCM
I missed any discussion using a national lottery to fund Social Security. Sounds good to me. But how would it work? Also, why not a 100mil pot? I thought that winnings were based on a % of the take. If the take is big enough, let the winnings grow, it will attract more people to play.

  3. Funny that when Slick Willy talked about the SS crisis, it was an article of faith among dimocrps, but now that Dubya is talking about it and wants to do something about it he’s making it up and there’s no such crisis.

  4. Vilmar we have our own problem here in Hernando County. Diane Rowden wants a resolution denouncing President Bush’s plan. She even got approval to have it put on the agenda. She’s trying to score points for for husband Jay the DEC Chairman.

  5. I saw that.  No, where were the Republicans on the board who should have said, politely, “Fuck you, Diane” and thrown this idea out?
