Continuing Saga At The UN

  1. From what I can tell, W. is stading on the sidelines when it comes to the UN and all their nonsense. He seems to think, rightly, that the American people find the UN body to be irrelevant and incompetent (many of us think know they are corrupt as well), and W. is letting the UN bloviate because nobody gives a damn about what they think.

However, the UN keeps pushing these outrageous initiatives that get taken seriously by sectors of Congress, and sooner or later one of these crackpot schemes is going to stick.

If the UN is irrelevant and not worthy of attention, then W. needs to make that clear and discourage these Congressmen from forming committees to explore the latest pile of communist crap the UN is trying to push on us.

W.’s nonchalant, “let history take it’s course” method is working wonders in the spread of ME democracy, but he is mistaken to use that same attitude when there are actual US laws and policies that can be affected. All it takes is one jackass congressman to put one of these bills on the table and all hell can break loose.

  2. Oh, one thing I failed to mention:  Bush has indicated he would NOT veto this if it passed!!!!

Hardly a guy standing off on the sidelines!

  3. “Can you see what’d happen if the U.S. found itself having to ask for permission to build, repair or run an off-shore oil rig?”
That is exactly what will happen with this treaty. But I think it could be much worse. I’ve read several things on this, and it is my understanding that the UN will basically have sovereign control over international waters. This will affect our fisheries, oil production, shipping, anything on the oceans or under them. BAD, BAD, deal for the U.S.
The under table bribes that will happen with this treaty will make “Oil for Food” look like a legitimate bank transaction. The Chinese want to drill for oil off California in international waters, shit, no problem, just slide a little money and a couple of 14 year old girls to the UN administrator controlling the program and go for it.

  4. Bush has indicated he would NOT veto this if it passed!!!!

Another good reason why I took that bumper sticker off my car since the election.

  5. Aren’t most offshore oil rigs in their parent nation’s territory?

The trick with this law is, will the UNunchs be able to enforce it any better than they can, say, run a peacekeeping operation? The Law of the Sea treaty also gives them responsibility for fighting pirates (which are becoming a problem again...) and we all know how good they are at fighting anything besides the sovereignty of the US.

  6. Yes, I believe you are correct about the oil rigs. But I know that in the north sea, Britain and some of the Scandinavian countries are drilling way outside of what would be considered territorial waters. The technology is also getting to a place that these off shore rigs can partially refine the oil off shore and pump it directly into ships for transport. You take that along with improvements in deep water drilling and we are really close to the point that any country with the technology will be able to drill anywhere in the world.

  7. This would be very bad for my new home, New Zealand.  They already have a big problem with the Japanese trying to fish here (because they have all but “fished-out” their own territorial waters).  The Japs have no scruples as to what gets caught in their nets, and they are constantly violating NZ fishing laws.  Add to that the complications of water/fishery rights disputes between the Crown and the Maoris, and this international BS would only make it worse.  Fuck the UN, and make the President live up to his “mandate” from Nov 2.  Bible thumping does not a conservative make.
