  1. I grew up in Bergen County (Well to do Conservatives) back in the 1950’s when “well-to-do” was an accurate description for most of us. Now 50+ years later it is absolutely true. You have to be well-to-do to live in Bergen County, especially in the Northern part.

Now I’ve migrated down to Monmouth County (The land of “McMansions"). Unfortunately, I can’t afford one of them either so it’s a 30-year old condo, retirement community.

I enjoyed looking at the map and find it amazingly accurate.

  2. He forgot Jackson Whiteville but maybe that’s being to granular.  Grew up in Caldwell and lived there on and off till I finally moved to snow country.

  3. Are the Jackson Whites (a federally unrecognized Native American tribe) even there anymore Balaams? What with the 287 connection going through to the NYS Thruway some years back, and the improvements to the big corner on Rt 17 there in Ramsey, plus all the suburban sprawl I would have figured they’d been pushed out by now.

NJY - me too, nearly. I was just over the state line from Montvale, in good old PR. Kinderkamack becomes Rt 304 at the NY line, and we were just off the 2nd exit. You betcha, little towns like Rivervale and Saddle River are unaffordable these days, and so is Closter, Harrington Park, Tappan, etc. Bergenfield maybe you could manage, but that’s getting more into the southern end of the county where things are ... very different.

  4. Yup Drew,

From Hackensack; South and South-West, towns are more “working-class”. Lodi, Garfield, Teterboro, Hasbrouck Heights, etc.

Go further South into Essex County and you have the greatest blight in the area Newark.

Speaking of the Jackson Whites, do you remember a place off Rte-17 in New York, once called: Motel on the Mountain? I heard it was a real den of very bad behavior.
