The Larks They Sang Melodious (aka Pleasant and Delightful)

Twas pleasant and delightful one midsummer’s morn
To view the fine meadows all covered with corn
And the blackbirds and thrushes sang on every green spray
And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day
: And the larks they sang melodious :
And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day.

2. A sailor and his true love were walking one day
Said the sailor to his true love “I’m bound far away
I’m bound for the Indies where load cannons do roar
I must go and leave you Nancy you’re the girl I adore
: I must go and leave you Nancy :
I must go and leave you Nancy you’re the girl that I adore.

3. The ring from off her finger she instantly drew
Saying “Take this dearest Willie and me heart will go too”
And as she embraced her tears from her eyes fell
Saying, “May I go along with you?” “Oh no me love farewell”
: Saying, “May I go along with you?” :
Saying, “May I go along with you?” “Oh no me love farewell”

4. So it’s farewell to you my dearest Nancy, I can no longer stay (So fare thee well my dearest Nancy, I’m bound far away)
For the topsail it is hoisted and the anchor is weighed (The ship is a-waiting out there in the bay)
And my ship she lies waitin’ for the next flowing tide (The anchor is hoisted she waits the next flowing tide)
And if ever I return again I will make you my bride
: And if ever I return again :
And if ever I return again I will make you my bride.

  1. Would that be Tiffany Aching to know?

I was hoping, since you mentioned Nanny Ogg, that I’d finally find out about the song where the wizard’s staff has a knob on top.

  2. Believe me, spontaneous group song simply does not erupt in bars in America.

Not too sure about that Drew. My bar days are over twenty years behind me, but back then Freebird was sure to bring a group response. As did:

    ‘Mony Mony’ by Billy Idol.
‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw?’ by Jimmy Buffet.
    ‘Strokin’’ by Clarence Carter.
    ‘America’ by Neil Diamond.
‘I’ve Been Everywhere’ by almost everybody.
‘Dancin’ in the Dark’ by Bruce Springsteen.

May have been a local thing, but I don’t think so. I participated in such group songs from Chicago, to Orlando, to Saratoga Springs, to Bremerton, to San Diego, and, of course, in my home in Dayton. A local band called the Dinosaurs was quite popular back when my wife and I were dating and dancing in the bars. They always got a group song response on those songs.
