  1. If everyone walks through them, how can anyone be profiled against? Me, I don’t fly much but I am ready for whatever tech enables me to leave my belt, coat and shoes on and not unpack my luggage every time I fly.

  2. Other Liberties???
I was under the impression the Brits had sold those long ago for a sack of walnuts and a case of blood pudding.

Good point Nicole.  I guess there’s always going to be ppl who look for insult where none exist.  As for flying, maybe it’s my age but frankly it isn’t fun anymore and stopped being so even before 9/11.  In our case we had to fly as first with my career I was overseas every year, and then the wife’s mother, so we were pretty much in the air a lot. The wife even more so then me.  The flights over here and back are a long and boring and cramped.
We may be coming home but only for a few months this spring to take care of needed things in CA.
We are giving very much thought to going by ship. That’s my first choice. So it takes 6 days. I can live with that.

  4. If you go by ship, make sure to count the lifeboats first. “Iceberg, dead ahead!!”

  5. The technology relies on object density.  Since clothing is not that dense but the surface of your skin is dense, then you get a real nice naked image.  Women have expressed concern because it’s a vivid naked picture of the body beneath the clothing.  The scanner would detect dense objects such as ceramic or plastic knives, etc. that a metal detector would miss.

The attempted plane bomber had a pocket sewn into his underwear in the crotch where he stashed a bag of powdered explosive.  He had a syringe and medicine bottle containing an acid which was the explosive detonator.  Experts have stated that the scanners would not have detected the powder because it’s not dense enough.  So short of a strip search he would have still been able to board with the chemical explosive.

One of the Saudi princes in charge of intelligence services for the kingdom was the target of a similar attack about a month or two earlier.  However, the explosives were planted inside the bombers body as the princes security staff strip search anyone planning to meet with him.  The attacker injected the acid through his skin to reach the implanted powder packet.  When he blew up, he missed the prince and injured his body guards instead.  It’s easy to claim you are diabetic and need to take an insulin shot!  The acid is clear and looks just like insulin.

Now that the terrorists are surgically implanting explosives, it gets near impossible to detect the explosives.  This is why common sense and detective based screening needs to be used.  i.e. a professional can tell if someone is lying, nervous, anxious, etc.  In the case of the recent plane bomber attempt, this guy bought a one way ticket from Yemen to Detroit with nothing but a small carry on bag and no coat in the middle of winter.  This should have raised some red flags and the guy should have been searched.  A basic police pat down would have found the bag of explosives.  An explosives sniffing police dog would have found the explosives.

Nope, instead we have morons searching 90 year old lady’s and 8 year old disabled children with leg braces!
