  1. Anak Kratatau has remained more or less active since it poked its head above water in the nineteen-twenties.  And if it does not soon blow, some other major Indonesian volcano will, in view of all the major recent seismic activity in that region.  A volcano has already erupted in Sumatra in the wake of those earthquakes.  Look for more to follow.

  2. This, of course, has nothing to do with Glow Ball Worming.

  3. With a big volcano blow like Krakatau in 1883, we will have Glow Ball Cooling for quite some time to come.

  4. Tsunamis in the English Channel?  How’d that happen - did the wave go up arount underneath the North Pole?

  5. Glow Ball Cooling is so passé these days. Whatever it is contributes to Glow Ball Worming. Especially if it’s something Americans do.

Science be damned. They don’t need no stinkin’ science. They have a theory and a model, which incidentally doesn’t work, they won’t disclose and only includes factors they need to “prove” the theory. rolleyes

  6. You all know that I spent 10 days in the Galapagos Islands last November.......The Galapagos Islands were formed thousands of years ago from volcanoes........There are still several active volcanoes in the Galapagos - one erupted recently in May on the island of Fernandina.........on my expedition I went ashore on Fernandina to photograph the flightless comorants (birds that cannot fly) and the Galapagos penguins -the only penguin to live on the equator........from my information, I do not believe much damage was done to the wildlife on the island...........

  7. Stink,

Global warming IS a bunch of hooey.  You said it right.

Toba is the world’s largest caldera.  If it blows, we’re in for it.  Yellowstone National Park is up in the top five largest calderas.  Geologists could not figure out the size of Yellowstone until they were finally able to fly over it!  The Canary Islands are up there as well.  If that volcano blows, the tsunami would wipe out our east coast.  I think I better go look up Toba to make sure I have that right.

  8. Amazing that the shock waves from the 1883 eruption” traveled around the world SEVEN TIMES! And at 200 MEGATONS it far outstrips even Tsar Bomba!

  9. Like ringing a bell, Macker.

We puny humans have nothing on mother nature. We exist on a whim.

  10. Stin,

How right you are.  We should be saying our ‘Amens’ to Mother Nature.  She and Father Time are indiscriminate killers.

  11. The “world environment” may or may not be “fucked up”, OCM, but when measured in the grand scale the effects of humanity on it are miniscule.

The environment is constantly changing. We are presently in the end stages of a mini ice age.

Temperature variations are shown throughout geologic history. Water levels rise and fall regularly. Hell, they also show that the poles have reversed the magnetic field of the earth several times. Our planet is an active dynamic thing.

Considering that humans weren’t around for most of these events, it’s pretty hard to blame us for them, so they ignore them. That’s the point of what I was saying.

When the predictions for global cooling didn’t pan out the activists with agendas selected a new theory then went looking for evidenciary support. Rather than take all evidence into consideration they pick and choose the evidence that fits their desired results.

The most glaring example is the world’s oceans. They are a gigantic heat sink and are not included in their models.

When data up to 1990 are plugged into their models they cannot correctly predict the conditions of 2000.

Having spent a lot of years in Buffalo, NY, I can assure you that the Great Lakes have shown a marked improvement over the decades.

The Buffalo river used to be a cesspool. It wasn’t as bad as the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland, which once famously caught fire, but it was pretty bad. Now you can fish there and eat the fish. I’d hazard a guess that the Cuyahoga is likewise cleaned up. Lake Erie is much cleaner than it was in the 60’s.

Old, dirty rust belt factories, major polluters, have been torn down and if they are replaced are much cleaner than their predecessors. The chemical factories that lined the Niagara river in Niagara Falls before 1970 are all gone.

Forest and wilderness areas are increasing in the U.S., but few talk about it.

Things are getting better, no matter what the screamers are telling you. The cleanup process takes time, but I assure you that it is under way and it is having a positive effect. It just takes a while for results to appear.

  12. Cat,

Stin is 100% right.  And he didn’t mention anything about ‘left’ or ‘right’.  He said ‘activists’.  They could be those in your crack in the middle.  I’ve taken two courses on this issue, and it’s laughable to listen to the whiners while comparing the ‘70’s to now when the improvement is utterly profound.

I’ll use the Potomac:  It was once considered one of the filthiest rivers in the country.  It is now in great shape.  As for the trees - for every tree that is cut down, another one is planted.  We have more forests and shrub land than we did a 100 years ago.

  13. I’ll just point out that nowhere did I mention left or right, OCM. I did discuss the dishonesty of people with an agenda.

Good sense would dictate that people who chop down trees for $$$ are replanting as they harvest those trees. That’s what makes it a renewable resource and they can go back and do it again. The days of clearcutting and moving on are long gone.

Do you have any idea how many trees the NYTimes kills every day?

We’re getting better at finding ways to conserve and renew our resources. It’s a victory of education and thought rather than ignorance and waste.

Fake “science” is not the answer. Real, honest, principled science is the way to solve real problems. Picking a data point because it can be extrapolated to support a theory is dishonest.

  14. Well, once the Redwood comes out of the poliwog stage it’s a tree. They’re not cutting any down, last I heard. I believe they’re (righfully) protected. They’re damn sure not making newspapers out of ‘em. Besides, they only seem to grow in a small area of the west coast of the U.S.

    Don’t move the goalposts, OCM.

The rest of the world is passing laws and signing treaties that effectively attack us, of course. Some are already having second thoughts as it’s beginning to appear that they’re not going to be able to adhere to the standards they’ve set for us. Of course, the most egregious offenders (China and India) are given a pass.

It becomes a left-right issue when somebody tries to paint it that way. They do this if they perceive a political advantage and are more than willing to lie about it.

  15. Cat,

In the July/August issue of The American Enterprise magazine, there is a short article entitled: “Clean Air, Dirty Tricks”

It’s too long to write, but a precis of it is that each year the American Lung Association publishes a report that insists our air quality is harmful to our health.  AEI (American Enterprise Institute) does its own thorough check and publishes its statistics.  These statistics are in sharp contrast to the ALA most pointedly stating the gross exaggerations of the ALA reports and the glossing over of any ‘good’ news in our air quality.  It is an eye-opener to read the comparison of statistics.

The last paragraph of the article states:  “As Schwartz notes, ‘The story of the last hundred years has been more people, more highways, more cars, more energy, more wealth...and less air pollution’.”

The American Enterprise Institute is not left OR right.  You can read the article at ‘techcentralstation.com’ or check out the magazine at TAEmag.com
