Sometimes I think even Battery acid would be too Humane for some of them..
Shock horror, lethal injection causes pain. This is a bad thing?
Damn you! That was gonna be my next post
No matter-I can still run with it.
Post away Barb. This subject has stupidity to burn. I think we should be working on making it hurt more.
Have you noticed that Infinity changes avatars as often as most people change their underwear?
I had a fiance who’s father was the executioner for PA and IA in his spare time. Back when the method was electrocution. It was just a job for him. That fact disturbed me. That a man, a civilized man, didn’t derive satisfaction from frying assholes ... somehow the job ennured him. If ya think about it ... we’ve all become ennured. We speak of ‘the death penalty’ with such detachment. Death should the inevitable reward for crimes against man and we should relish it as a society. Therein lies prevention.
Damn Steel, you have had an interesting life. Everyone’s karma catches up to them eventually.
Stanley (#5),
I have GOT to change my undies more often…
#6,#7,
I hereby beseech you both to watch The Outlaw Josie Wales. Again.
As Louis L’Amour once wrote (I’m not saying the EXACT words because I read it like five years ago and it would take me eleven months to go through my Louis L’Amour collection)):
“With execution, the state is not taking pleasure in taking a life for a life. It is merely eliminating those who refuse to play by the rules.”
I LOVE Louis L’Amour. Too bad he died in 1989. I’m sure he made a great Grandpa.
If you want satisfaction from a death penalty, go for the guillotine. As soon as the severed head lands in the straw, with the heart still pumping out reams of blood, the man handling the guillotine would pick up the head by the hair and show it off to the crowd. Then he would turn the head and show it to the headless body. It takes the brain a few minutes to die without oxygen. The ocular and auditory systems bypass the spinal column and the head is therefore able to see and hear the cheers as well as its own headless body. Anne Boleyn’s jaws snapped at the crowd and they ran screaming away. So, for a few minutes, at least, you know you’re dead. Gruesome.
But to take Steel’s point about becoming inured to being executioner - one can only imagine. In the firing squad, of the seven who shoot at the convicted-to-die, one rifle fires a blank. The shooters do not know which rifle has the blank. That way, each can ‘think’… it wasn’t me who killed today.
The guillotine was a mechanical advance predicated on efficiency. Before that invention, the most common form of capital punishment was hanging or burning at the stake.
Personally, having 24/7 coverage of a convicted/condemned human being hung slowly over a roasting fire broadcast to millions would be a dandy way of preventing crime.
I knew the article was going for this: “They called for a moratorium on U.S. executions until better protocols can be developed.” I’m just surprised it took 12 ‘graphs to get there.
This was the same publication that inflated the death toll in Iraq with some really shoddy data collection.
No agenda here...move along, please.
