  1. Drew,
You’ve outdone yourself with this post. Excellent.
We’ve been following things in France here with some interest.

Things there are a mess and now some are blaming Sarko’s wife for his unpopularity with voters. ???  They think it is said, she’s too ‘posh’ and so there’s been an attempt to tone down her dress, where she shops and even what music it’s reported she listens too. But the more the handlers and spinners try to make her “one of the people,” the worse they make it.

As for Hollande, pity the French who won’t have voted for him if by some chance he wins. Because his record on economics is not a good one. Read about it last week but didn’t save the article. Damn. Should have now I see your post.

  2. No point. Hollande is a socialist, and that means borrow, tax, and spend. And half or more of that spending will be on paying off his cronies, lap dances, or EBT scams. Just in a fwench way, that’s all.

We’ve seen this game before. Heck, he’s even recycling the campaign slogan we’ve come to detest.

Meanwhile, the whole darn government in Holland falls because their debt is 4.5% GDP or something tiny like that, and they can’t agree where to cut corners to balance their budget. Not good news, but I like the measure of responsibility it implies. And that they even have a budget, and take the responsibility for making one. Gosh, I wish our government worked like that.

Even better is in Iceland, where they just convicted the former PM because of his involvement in the US mortgage fiasco ... which cost half of Iceland their pensions.

Haarde, who led the government from 2006 to 2009, was the first government leader anywhere to face criminal prosecution because of the global banking crisis. He smiled and shook hands with supporters after the judgment was announced.

Unfortunately they aren’t going to shoot him, or put him adrift on an iceberg, or anything. No fines, no jail. No feeding him to polar bears. So why bother? But at least the Icelandish are holding their leaders criminally liable for not keeping the country safe ... financially. It’s a start.

I’d like to see this kind of government responsibility here. With the polar bears.
