I was in a B17 at a Pheonix airshow about 20 years ago and what floored me was how small they were. From the show 12:00 high they looked so much larger.
Too right, that.
Once you’ve walked across the tarmac to walk up the stairs into a modern jet airliner, even a “little” 737 (that stands 5 stories tall!!), all of those old planes look like toys powered by rubber bands.
These days even a fighter plane (eg F14) can carry nearly 3/4 of the Lancaster’s load and still fly 5 times as fast. The 60s era medium sized F111 could carry half again more at nearly 10 times the speed.
Still, the sound. And the sense of history.
Me and the wife belong to the CWHM. If she ever gets better she’s got a bought and paid for one hour flight on their Lanc.
