On this 4th of July, let us honor true love

I found this on a website called DigDang. It features weird, funny, off-beat photos. This one was actually titled ‘True Love’.  I’ve probably over-reached in trying to tie it in to the 4th of July. If so, sue me.

I was impressed enough to start reading up on the Queen. It may well have been ‘true love’, at least from Elizabeth’s side. Now, I know Wikipedia isn’t an infallible source, but the Queen’s entry says she fell in love with Duke Philip when she was 13. They corresponded for eight years. Elizabeth’s mother was against the marriage. Seems Philip’s family had Nazi ties. Hell, the whole House of Windsor is Germanic and has Nazi ties. You can be German and not be a Nazi. But I understand the thinking: my grandfather fought in WWII. He was first-generation German, so they sent him to fight the Japanese. They made an effort to keep recent German immigrants and their sons from fighting in Europe.

  1. I hope the old girl can keep on going until Prince Charles the Loopy dies and never attains the Throne.

  2. I’m with you Steve, but I doubt that Elizabeth II will reign longer than Victoria. She’s already the second-longest reigning monarch. (FYI, Queen Victoria holds the record.) And she’s been the Queen all of my life. I’m not certain I could handle a change.

I’m hoping that Charles will simply step aside and let one of Diana’s boys ascend. I’m unaware that Harry or William are tainted with the marital scandal the Charles is known to have. Diana was an idiot, but then Charles believes in global-warming. He’s at least as stupid as Diana was.

I mention Princess Di as being stupid. Well, she did marry Charles. But my point was her campaign against landmines. She wanted to abolish landmines as a weapon. Good luck with that. Never happen.

But, I do agree with the late Princess that after any war, both sides, victor and vanquished, should work to remove any landmines they set. I’ve read stories that in Europe people are still finding WWI landmines the hard way.

  3. Charles will be a disaster. Unfortunately one thing he has inherited from his old man (Phil the Greek) is a vastly over rated sense of his own self importance. The man is a barking loon. George the Third had an excuse. Well two really. He was a German and had porphyria. Charles has no such excuse.

  5. And Lady Thatcher is truly a great woman. In fact, unless memory is off, Lady Thatcher had to tell Reagan once to ‘not go wobbly on me’ or something to that effect.

Reagan, Thatcher, John Paul II; the triumvirate that brought down the Soviet Union.

Maybe someday someone will write a ‘tell all’ book of the relationship between Lady Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II. I’d like to think that they were like Disraeli and Victoria. Obviously I don’t know that. But I like to think that the two most powerful women in the British Empire were on good terms.

  7. My mother - whose father was born in London - has several British magazines on Elizabeth’s coronation and the death of her father George VI - they are now in protective covering - a true glimpse into history.

It is a shame that Charles turned out so badly - I keep hoping he does die before he can get the throne.
