The French aren’t always liberal pansies on domestic issues. Remember they banned traditional Muslim headgarb in the public schools. And Chirac is a “conservative” in France. On the foreign policy front, however, there is no hope for them. They crossed the line from useless ally to enemy when they stabbed Powell in the back and lobbied for the defeat of the “second” resolution leading up to the war in Iraq.
John,
They crossed the line back in the 1776 era when they stabbed your namesake, and George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin in the back during our war with England. They only supported us because they hated the British more. It was not until they fully realized that England would, in fact, lose that they came though more energetically with aid. Until then they stalled and blocked and delayed. I firmly beliee if they’d not done so we’d have won the war 2 years sooner.
Read Adams’ biography by David McCullough. It is fascinating.
