Sad to hear about your roof. In KY after a horrendous period of storms and flooding - the roof in the garage developed a leak - just a drip. When I called the Insurance Co - she asked if there were any others in the house part of the roof - I said I was too scared to get up into the attic to find out. We managed a deal with a friend (he actually wanted to trade houses as his sat in the next county (same road) and he wanted his kids to go to our HS) and got off paying just the deductible for the new roof (of course part of the ‘as is’ sale deal was that the new roofing materials were in the storage shed) - so he just had to do the work (which he did for a second (just prior to retiring from the Army) job.
I wish for the best - any movement toward returning to the US?
Get up there and nail a tarp down. It’s ugly, and you’ll probably get a ticket, but that will cost less than the damage a water leak causes. Because you know the insurance company isn’t going to cover all of it.
