Sweet...hey Skipper can you provide source of photo? and id the rifle. Appears to be “real” M14 (I see what looks like selector switch on right side) or is it Springfield Armory M1A (which I own myself). Definitely has right mounts for that scope though irons are lost as a result. I bought expensive 4-20X scope for mine only to discover that proper mounts, rings and smithing would cost almost as much as scope to have true “return to zero” capability. Scope still remains in box as a result.
I was wondering about the choice of rifle as well. I thought the snipers favoured the Remington 700. Still I suppose it gives you a faster follow up shot. Though I doubt that is needed very often!
Accurized M-14’s with telescopic sights are called M-21’s. They’re sweet to shoot.
Had experience with one (minus the ‘scope) when I shot on the state High-Power Rifle Team back in the 1970’s. Lake City 7.62mm Match ammo is a thrill. Hitting targets at 600 meters with iron sights was even sweeter.
Traded a Springfield Armory M-1A for an H&K-91 back in the 1980’s. Shot 1/4” groups right out-of-the-box. I’d take either one over an M-16 any day.
Last I checked the Navy is still using the ‘14 as standard issue security on it’s afloat security details. The .223 will not shoot thru steel doors like the 7.62 which is a really handy thing when your fighting in a steel ship.
I miss the 14. As soon as I get the bucks a new one with a modern stock are mine!!!
MAJ Mike, thanks for the info. I shot my SA M1A last year at High Power clinic (one of the few with .30 cal, most were .22 poodle shooters), 55 year old eyes and undiagnosed at the time hpertension proved to be my undoing. Shot low 70’s over the course of two weekends, not my gig I reckon.
That’s definitely the most interesting motivational poster I’ve seen in my life.
