Mathless Math

  1. I’ve got a personal gripe here.  When I was a kid back in the 50’s and 60’s, math teaching was pretty poor.  IMHO all math textbooks are geared toward mathematicians and their very unusual mindset, not “normal” people.  I struggled with it into my 20’s until I became self taught in basic geometry and algebra so I could build a better stock car for the dirt track.

    I found out that math isn’t that complex.  It’s all about a series of relationships that are presented in formulas.  In short, you just follow the directions in the cook book.

    7=Y+3 What’s Y equal?

    get Y by itself, opposite operation, both sides.

    7-3=(Y+3)-3

    4=Y

    All you have to do is think a little about what’s happening and it almost answers itself.

    It’s really that dumb simple and the schools still can’t teach it!  This new one is even worse than the old one!
