  1. The Guard is not the solution to the border problem. The Guard is only for short term deployments such as guarding disaster sites, restoring order, distribution of emergency supplies, etc. There needs to be a long term solution to the border problem. A helluva lot more border patrol agents would be a good start on the solution.

    Besides, since the end of the cold war so many specialties have been shifted from the regular services to the Guard and Reserve as part of the “peace dividend” and reduction in forces that the Guard and Reserves are more likely to be activated for national defense due to this shifting of specialties.

  2. Damn straight, OCM. The situation at our borders (and in our ports) seems to be a clear and present danger. I seriously doubt only Mexican migrant workers and drug smugglers are taking advantage of our porous borders. The next major act of terrorism here could come from agents slipping across the river at night. Citizen vigilante groups are not the answer. We should greatly intensify our efforts at the Mexican border, either by swelling the ranks of the Border Patrol, or calling in troops. This is not an issue to play politics with.
