Land Snatch In DC

  1. "We the people” will see taxpayer dollars spent for a sports palace for a poor suffering hard-working major league team. Players and owners have it rough you know, and deserve a handout from the public trough, which is especially galling when:

    1. There already is a stadium and the land beneath it in DC in an open area near a highway, and they’re going to screw up an old residential neighborhood.

    2. Citizens lose their homes for the benefit of other citizens who like baseball… er,ah, make that for the benefit of fat cats, bureaucrats, TV and folks who can afford to drop a couple hundred for a family evening.

    Makes me want to scream.

  2. There is no doubt in my mind that things like highways, airports and commuter rail are examples of things that truly are in the public use clause. Sports stadiums and convention centers are sort of pushing the envelope a bit, a gray area, if you will.

There should be a higher standard for public use in those cases and a bit more of an advantage for the property owners being deprived of their rightful property. If the majority of them, for example, refuse to sell then eminent domain shouldn’t be exercised and it should never be exercised for a private enterprise.

Yeah, we’ve been over this ground before, but I have a feeling it’s going to keep coming up.
