  1. Next, the school administration will experiment with separate ‘white’ & ‘colored’ drinking fountains.

Michigan Civil Rights Initiative worthy of support

    Special To The Skipper

Next year, Michigan voters will make a decision on the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative. If passed, the MCRI would prohibit state universities and other government entities from giving preferential treatment to one person or company over another based on race, ethnicity, national origin or gender.

I am the only Republican candidate in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race who supports this initiative. My opponents in the GOP primary have joined Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, in opposing the MCRI.

I support the initiative, not because I believe it’s politically expedient, but on principle. Equality before the law is one of the core principles of our Constitution. Unfortunately, equality remains only an ideal, something we aim to achieve but never quite reach. Historically, white males of European heritage have had distinct advantages over other citizens. The question remains: How do we remedy this reality?

Attempting to give one group preferential treatment to compensate for past inequities does not benefit our society. We must remain committed to the ideal of equality backed by the rule of law. Seeking special privilege is not a proper response to unfair treatment. Rather, we must use the court system and current laws, including those in place through the 1964 Civil Rights Act, to ensure that the rights of every person are protected.

I’ve spent much of the past five years working on economics and public policy in some of the poorest nations on earth. The difference between prosperous, free countries and those that are poor and oppressed has little to do with their natural resources, their population density or the talents of their citizens. What distinguishes them is whether the countries are based on privilege or on the rule of law being applied to all.

The United States must be about applying the rule of law equally to all its citizens. We have some distance to travel before we can say we’ve achieved our Constitutional ideals.

I support the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative because it’s consistent with our Constitutional ideals.

I support the MCRI because it seeks to achieve the goals of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which states that “All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, and privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion or national origin.”

I support the MCRI because it’s in harmony with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision declared on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

For generations our society has wrestled with issues involving ethnicity, race, national origin and gender. Only through a firm adherence to equality before the law will we find the just society we seek.

Jerry Zandstra, a minister in Cutlerville, is running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Democrat Debbie Stabenow.

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Michigonians, vote Zandstra. Put Evil-Liberal Senator Stabenow back in the private sector, where she belongs.

Then move to Florida and make the value of my home go up (SunShine and NO state income tax).  Michigan, where it snows until June and citizens are taxed to death, or Tampa Bay, where the palm trees sway island  question

  4. The neighborhood I lived in during my high school years is outside DC on the Maryland side. Bussing to achieve racial integration was implemented in my senior year; they did not force seniors to be bussed. Okay, very much a white suburban neighborhood in those days, bus the whities to the black schools so someone will think the black schools are, poof, made better somehow, whatever.

Now the neighborhood is almost entirly black. THEY STILL PRACTICE BUSSING! When the local NAACP leader pushed to get permission from higher-higher for neighborhood black kids to attend neighborhood black schools, the NAACP fired his black ass so they could load little black kids onto busses and haul their butts over to other black schools!

So, what is the point here? It is that policies ARE the goal, or the God, not the results of those policies.
