‘They have always showed they are close to the people and they get the same in return,’ La Russa said of the Italian soldiers.
Given enough money of course.
I was about to say, tens of thousands can buy a LOT of closeness..

Report this morning says some Italian minister (I already which department or agency) is very angry and is planning on a law suit against The Times. Says it isn’t true.
Be interesting to see how it plays out. I do think it’d be a national disgrace if true. If it isn’t true as reported, The Times should be sued. I mean, that’s a hell of a story to promote.
Had to run into Southampton this morning, which is a very large city and once a very major port heavily bombed by the Germans in war. Guys .... I heard more accents and languages in a few blocks of that city then I have here in Winchester in five years.
And I also saw something I hadn’t seen outside an Asian country till now. This older looking Chinese or maybe Japanese or Korean? Was holding up this hand made sign on the end of a long pole advertising .... ??? I’m not sure what it was advertising. Except it reminded me of a third world street vendor.
Let’s not discount the possibility that the arrogant Fwench managed to screw up somehow and get their own soldiers killed.
Then there is the possibility that the soldiers were buying things out of their own pockets, and it was assumed that it was a government sponsored “bribe”..

Reminds me of those jokes the Desert Rats used to tell after their encounters with Mussolinis finest in North Africa. Italian tanks came with six speeds. One forward gear and five reverse!
