You’re starting to sound like Kim DuToit! And that is a good thing. As a man who grew up there, his piece on Africa is well worth reading.
I grew up in Rhodesia, saw it become Zimbabwe in 1980, then left in 1984 to join the British Army. I went back numerous times between then and 2000 (my folks still lived there), and watched one of Africa’s success stories turn into a turd-world hole. The West was really keen to support the terrorists in their efforts to secure an “independent” country in the ‘70s, and gave legitimacy to a Marxist who has been Prime Minister/President for 25 years now. Maybe if we withold any aid (food and financial)the sight of a few hundred thousand bloated corpses will get the locals off their arses and into a whole new “liberation war”. And if they don’t, fuck ‘em, I’m sure the UN will eventually get around to a resolution or two while treating Mugabe like royalty when he ventures abroad.
Hey Vilmar - you’re on a roll today!
If the US just waits a while, doesn’t supply aid, the UN might have to do something, but in the meantime AIDS will take care of some of the problem anyway at the current rates of new infection. So why fret about it?
