  3. Just shoot the bastards....

If you see them on the battlefield, MAKE THEM MARTYRS....

    Why is that so hard?

Hmm, .75 bullet, or $50,000 to keep them in comfort?

Sounds like pretty simple economics to me....

  4. And politically it sounds a bit easier to me as well....

Opps… Killed in battle, or, prisoner, watch your P’s and Q’s…

    Hmm, Sorry little Terrorist...BOOM!!!

  5. The circumstances of American possession of Gitmo were once common knowledge, but apparently this is no longer true.  One may safely assume, therefore, that our reasons for holding onto the place have also been obscured.

The base is ours as a result of the Spanish-American War, which resulted, among other things, in the liberation of Cuba from Spanish colonial tyranny.  In gratitude, Cuba agreed to lease us Gitmo as long as we wanted it.

As noted by Theodore Mason in his book, Across the Cactus Curtain (New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1984):

“Gitmo stands today as the last symbol of the former neocolonial relationship between Cuba and the United States.  As such, it is an infuriating symbol that sticks in the craw of Fidel Castro.  In his 1962 speech on the anniversary of his revolution, Castro damned the base as ‘a dagger plunged into Cuban soil.’ While he pledged not to remove the base by force, he vowed that ‘it is a piece of land we will never give up.’ Since 1962, he has repeatedly called for the return of the territory....

“Some United States politicians also have joined the “return Gitmo” chorus, including former Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern…

“...Castro...claims that the United States illegally occupies Guantanamo.  Since his government didn’t sign the treaty, it is not bound to respect it, in his opinion.  He also contends that the treaty isn’t valid because it was imposed on Cuba--a contention that is incorporated in the Cuban constitution as Article 10.

“...Castro...is, according to most experts in international law, stuck with the situation because he promised during the early days of his regime to honor all international obligations.  He could ignore international law and attack Gitmo, but this would provide the U.S. with the justification of invading Cuba and removing him....

“...The United States has little to gain from sacrificing Gitmo....The Navy doesn’t want to lose its ‘Gibraltar of the Caribbean.’ And in the Navy’s estimation, the importance of Gitmo has increased rather than diminished....Along with the naval bases at Key West, Florida, and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, Gitmo dominates the main maritime entrances to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.  The hundreds of islands and thousands of square miles there would be difficult to patrol without Gitmo.  From Gitmo, the Navy also protects the safety of the air routes from the east coast of the United States to the west coast of South America and guards the security of the approaches to the Panama Canal....

“More than its strategic value, its usefulness makes Gitmo important.  From its Gibraltar-like position, the Navy can provide search and rescue assistance, antisubmarine warfare support, aircraft services, and disaster relief for neighboring islands....

“...Gitmo is valued most as a naval facility for training the crews of the Atlantic Fleet and some allied navies.  Its location provides perfect weather conditions that permit shakedown and refresher training throughout the year.  It has a big, land-locked bay sheltered from the weather.  A 100-fathom curve lies at the mouth of the bay, enabling the largest ships to begin deep-water training within minutes of weighing anchor....”

Meanwhile, old Fur Face fumes and seethes, and there is no grief in that.  And it is not bad strategy to retain a place that constitutes a burr in his tyrant’s ass.  As senility, frustration and nearly fifty years of failure close in on him, he may yet do something to cause us to liberate Cuba once again....

    Hope this helps.

  6. Hey thanks, Tannenberg. I had wondered about that… I hope that cigar-chomping bastard tries… His people would be ever so grateful.  ANYWAY,

What Jaguar said in comment #3 is right. Problem is, when they surrender to you, you can’t just gun ‘em down in cold blood - AND, let’s not forget, with all of the coercive (thank God) interrogation techniques we use, we have gotten TONS of intel from those bunch of sorry-assed towelheads.  So, IT IS worth the $50,000 or whatever (my guess is that it costs less than $50k a year to house them) it costs…

  7. Always a pleasure to be of service.
